i purchased an Imac running Leopard. I don't have the install disks, and the previous user didn't wipe the system clean for me, so it still has all his stuff on it. How do I delete everything from the previous user and do a clean install of the os?

Without installer discs you cannot do what you ask. You can purchase a retail copy of Leopard, Snow Leopard, or Lion depending upon what the hardware supports - See below:

    Snow Leopard General requirements

    • Mac computer with an Intel processor
    • 1GB of memory
    • 5GB of available disk space
    • DVD drive for installation
    • Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.
    • Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and terms apply.

    Lion System Requirements

    • Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
    • 2GB of memory
    • OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
    • 7GB of available space
    • Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.

Otherwise, what you can do is this:

    1. Open Accounts preferences in System Preferences.
    2. Create a new user account with admin status. Give it the username and password you prefer to use.
    3. Log into the new user account.
    4. Open Accounts preferences in System Preferences.
    5. Click on the lock icon and enter your new admin password.
    6. Select the previous owner's account from the list then click on the Delete [-] button.
    7. Select the last option but do not select the sub-option to Secure Erase.
