Tried , via System Preferences, to change my desktop photo. Oddly, some images in my library appeared, but many wouldn't - instead,a question mark appeared in the thumbnail box.

Ran Cocktail, but it didn't help.

Using Mountain Lion and the latest version of iPhoto.

iPad 2, iOS 5.0.1

Do the images show up in other apps? Mail? Pages? iMovie?

Unlikley. Given that the Library appears correctly in the other apps it suggests that the problem is in Desktop Pictures.

It may be a bunged up cache file.

    Try this:

Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'

    Import a few pics.

Now go to Desktop Pictures and see if you can access these images in the new Library.

    If you can

Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and select your original library.

    Regards

Have a read of my instructions again.

They describe how to make a new empty library.

Then import some pics to it.

Then try access them via the Desktop Pictures SystemPreference

    The how to change back.

Sorry but I din't know how to make that more simple.

    Regards
