Q: hard drive replacement on iBook G3

It appears that my wife's iBook G3's hard drive has gone south. I am rtying to boot from the DVD drive and can't boot from the optical drive except with a Diskwarrior V3 disk I created previosuly. I was able to boot from a Tech Tool V4.01 disk once but not since that initial boot. Any ideas? I plan on replacing the drive but do want to confirm that it is in fact the hard drive so thought I would boot from optical drive to do some diagnostics first since replacing the hard drive on the iBook G3 is very difficult. Any ideas would be welcome.

iBook G3, Mac OS X (10.4.11), 640MB RAM

Hello,

You say that you are trying to boot from the DVD drive. What version of MAC OS X are you trying to boot into?
Have you tried holding 'C' key on the keyboard while booting with the disk in the drive?
This version of Mac OS X you have, is it a retail disk or the gray system restore disks?

Are you attempting to boot from the Mac OS X 10.4 retail DVD?

Some iBook G3s were not equipped with an optical drive that is capable of reading DVDs. Are you certain that hers is?

Can you tell us the exact model? You can choose from this list:
