I am trying to erase my hard drive on imac G4.  I have a Mac OS X Tiger upgrade CD, tho the CD itself says OS X Tiger (does not say upgrade on it, but when I insert it, it says upgrade on my desktop).  I  insert it into an external hard drive ·our internal has died - and started computer while holding down  the C key, it did not start from the disk, but started up normally.  Will that method not work from an external hard drive?  Or is it that this disk doesn't do that?  When I open the files on the disk, I can see the Utlitites file and go there and ask it to erase the disk, and it goes thru it, but then hangs on "creating temporary folder" for awhile then goes back to the menu where I choose my erase options.  So...what am I doing wrong?  And why does it need to create a temporary folder if I am erasing the disk?  I don't want it to store anything.  If I need to do this another way, please let me know.  Thank you.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.4.8)
