Q: Inaccurate Unread Messages Count

Why is Messages showing the wrong unread count? After I read the messages in the chat window it still says I have unread messages and I can't make it go away. If I exit that chat window it disappears, but if I start chatting with that person it shows the unread message count again...

    HI,

Add a New Message to the Messages chat window.

    Make it the "front" message.

Now change back to the Message that says it has Unread Messages (and the blue indicator).

Does this make they go away ?

    Hi,

I have the same issue. The messages aren't marked as read even if I answer on them.

    The described actions didn't helped.

    Hi,

As I implied I have seen the blue indicator an a Chat and the Headline in the top part of the Messages window that says there is Unread Messages.

The time I had I had it I had two open chats and the one that was currently the Front refused to lose the blue indicator.

Clicking back and forth with the other Chat did not Resolve it.

However creating a  New Message and going to that "Chat" and then back to the conversation/Chat i was involved with resolved the issue.

Since then I have found that Messages that arrive in Messages but behind the current App I am using (Normally Firefox) do lose the blue Indicator and the headline when Messages becomes the "Front" app.

i.e It seems to work if Messages was in the background and is brought forward to being the Front app.

I tried this and it did not help.

I don't know if this is related, but I also noticed at the same time when my chat message count is not updating properly my hot corners and multi-gesture swiping between screens/launchpad are also not working.

    Hi,

I am talking about viewing the Message Window itself

    Messages (1 unread)
    Uploaded with Skitch!

The DOCK also shows a Badge number

Inaccurate Unread Messages Count: Apple Support Communities

I found that the New Message was Out of Sight (below the bottom edge of the window) even though the App was the "front" app.

Scrolling down to see the new messages seems to resolved this.

I have these setting in System Preferences > Notifications

    Notifications
    Uploaded with Skitch!

It might pay to try a PRAM reset.

    Shut down the computer.

Restart it holding down Apple/CMD ( or ⌘)+ALT( ⌥)+P+R Keys until you have heard three Start Up Bongs.

    PRAM Keys

Ralph I undestand what you are saying but that is not fixing the problem/there are no actual unread messages below the edge of the screen.

Have not tried the PRAM reset..

    HI,

From the title of your first post and the way the first post was phrased I was under the impression you were seeing the blue blob and "title" to the Messages window.

In a later post I had the thought that you meant the Dock Badge (the red numbered items)

Now you are saying you don't have any Unread Messages anywhere in the window.

Solution... I had this same issue with my work Exchange account. I remove the account from Apple Mail and set it up again. That did not work. BUT... when I changed my username for my exchange account and re-set it up with the new username in apple mail it worked a treat.

    HI,

I am not sure what you answer/advice about the Mail App does to answer the issue with the Messages app ?

Messages has nothing to do with Mail or Exchange.

I love how most users are satisfied with jumping through hoops to resolve a problem that APPLE should be fixing. People, this is a BUG in Apple's software, how about we hold them accountable? Start complaining to Apple, and get this nonsense fixed.

    HI,

A "bug" in my book would be something that was repeatable for a large number of users across several version of an App of across various hardware options.

To get to that stage one has to see if there is a solution, work out a cause if there is one and judge how many people it effects.

Although there are a few threads "dedicated" to the Red Number/ Unread Messages indicators this is stuck on making sure we are talking about the same things.

There has been very little jumping/action in this tread at all.

If you think Apple should be doing something then you could use the iChat feedback page

The reason I suggest this is that Messages  is coded as iChat under the hood and has sequential  version number that follows on from iChat 6.

Notice how there are blue indicators next to every chat and the chat count on the bottom reads 46 unread messages. ALL the messages have been read, but it doesn't acknowledge that. Even if I create a new chat window, it does not go away.
