Hi community

I am having an unbelievable time right now trying to figure out why I am experiencing occasional crackling on my audio playback in Logic and I wondered if anyone here has or has had similar issues. Now, I'm sure it may be user error but I have tried just about everything short of completely reinstalling everything although I fear that may be my next step

I have a 27" iMac 2.93GHz intel i7 with 16GB RAM running Lion 10.4.7 and Logic 9.1.7 in 64bit. Audio interface is Apogee Duet 2 and software plugins are Spectrasonics (everything), NI Kontakt 5, Izotope Ozone 5. I have many more plugins but these are the ones I use most frequently.

So what happens is... I run a session and am happily recording and editing and doing my thing until about an hour maybe into the project. Then as I hit the playback in Logic, my speakers (and headphones) are filled with an annoying crackling sound accomanying the audio. I also notice the cpu in the transport bar is way up on the red zone! Now sometimes I can restart and it goes away but usually it'll appear again. It is most infuriating as I have several TV projects I am working on which need to be completed as well as a number of other things in the pipeline. I an nercous about getting musicians into my studio incase the problem arises and more time is wasted. I took the iMac into an Apple genius who ran a bunch of tests and didn't find anything untoward so I am thinking it must be software related. The only things I can think of that have changed are I updated to Lion and changed from the duet 1 to the duet 2 usb version.

I have tried turning off plugins and sometimes the problem goes away, sometimes it persists. I don't think it's my buffer settings as usually everything is ok. The crackling doesn't bounce down in my mix so it's just on playback.

I am now at a complete loss as to know what to do. Obviously a complete re-install of everything may be the solution but before I go down that dark and unlit road, does anyone here have any suggestions? Is it worth me risking upgrading to Mountain Lion and seeing if that solves it. Can I retrodrade to Mountain Lion? Any help/suggestions/ much appreciated.

Thanks

Steve
