Jul 30, 2012 2:11 AM in response to ahmad_aljalladby PhilGreen,I've tried skype and other apps with the same results - no camera recognised. The machine's brand new and the camera hasn't worked at all. Either there's a setting I've missed or it's DOA. If I didn't know better I'd say there was no camera installed.
Any ideas what I may have missed? Or should I be logging a hardware fault?

Mac OS XIt's a problem with your computer, more likely than not. Did you purchase it within the last 14 days? If so, you can return it and get a new one, same configuration, few questions asked, or get a full refund. Before you do that, however, check out one thing: go under the Apple menu to "About This Mac" and then click "More Info..." then "System Report...". Look in the Hardware section under USB and see if you see "FaceTime HD Camera (Built-in)" installed. If not, then the system is simply not recognizing the camera.
Take it back to the Apple Store as soon as possible. Even if you're not in your 14 day 'grace period' you still have (at least) a one year warranty and they should be able to repair or replace the model.
Good luck,
Clinton

Jul 30, 2012 2:29 AM in response to clintonfrombirminghamby PhilGreen,Hi Clinton
I checked as you suggested and the Facetime camera is not showing up under USB. I've had the machine less than 14 days and will take your advice on that support call.
Thanks for your help.

There is a good chance there is absolutely nothing at all wrong with your computer.

Aug 4, 2012 3:26 PM in response to PhilGreenby dreeZruleZ,Same was happening with my Facetime camera on the new MacBook Pro Retina.
It started to happen when I tried to use the Facetime App while Skype was on. Then it went away... no app was able to open it again (I didn't try the Facetime one)
It came back when I closed Skype, and then open the Facetime App. It seems to have reset it, now it works for all apps.
I hope it would do the same for you!
cheers!

Aug 11, 2012 1:44 PM in response to PhilGreenby mlambert2,I am having the same issue. Once I installed Mountian Lion my FaceTime camera stopped working. It does not show up in the system report. I have reset the SMC a number of times and that does not work for me. Any other suggestions?
BTW, I have BootCamp installed and the camera hardware does not show up on the Windows side either.

Aug 11, 2012 4:18 PM in response to PhilGreenby mekanik,Same here. I was on Skype and all of a sudden it stopped working. No other application was able to find installed camera either (FaceTime, PhotoBooth). System restart did not help. But 20 min later it started working again. So now, it was a long call, over 2.5h when this happened. It just reminded me that for example users of Sony NEX7 camera were complaining of sensor overheating during filming and camera shutting down. I understand that sensor in my mac is tiny but then again it's crammed in within this super thin shell with the screen (producing some heat) underneath and not much chance of this heat dissipating easily (no vents in the upper case). Can it be it shuts down because of the heat? Did anyone have similar experience?

Aug 13, 2012 3:15 PM in response to PhilGreenby christophseufert,I have the same problem. But for me seems to be a pure software/OS problem: After a reboot it always works again.

Sep 14, 2012 12:45 PM in response to christophseufertby gregariousfruit,I have the same issue, which, like christophseufert, is always resolved by a reboot. If anyone knows how to resolve this more permanently, I'd be glad to hear about it.

Sep 17, 2012 1:26 PM in response to PhilGreenby Rob-zh,Same problem here. I have had the MBP Retina for several months. The camera was working fine with Skype, FaceTime, etc. As of recently the camera stopped working. Only after restart it appears working but only until wake up after hibernation. I noticed that the troubles with the camera started following an update of iTunes to version 10.7.
