Why does it take so long during startup?

Pre Mountain Lion, my Macbook Pro started up as it always has, fast and efficient.  Since I upgraded to Mountain Lion, when I turn my cpu on, the start up literally takes close to 5 minutes.  That is Windows esque.  I hate Windows partly in because of the time it always took to start up.  My first favorite thing about my Mac aside from many others is the startup time.  WHAT THE **** IS THE PROBLEM?

    Sometimes a clean install is best instead of upgrading.

     

    I upgraded from Lion to ML and my boot time was quite slow. Did a clean install yesterday and now its much quicker.

    MIne was a bit slow - not nearly as slow as yours, but I eset PRAM and that helped.

    I zapped the pram on my wife's MacBook Pro and it did not help anyhting. She said I ruined the MBP by installing ML 10.8.2.  She says it takes forever to boot and even longer to shut down.  I checked here user settings and removed ALL login startup stuff and it is still really slow.

     

    Could the Cloud cause it to be so slow? If so how do you disable it. 

     

    I am open to any suggestion, other than going back to 10.6 to speed up the MBP

    I called AppleCare and after checking with others the tech came back with Mountain Lion does take longer to boot and to shut down.  No suggestions werer offered other than to do a clean install.

     

    I suspoect a 7200 RPM hard drive may help. The MBP came with 5400 RPM drive.

    I carried the MacBook Pro to the Genius Bar this morning and it PASSED all of the Apple hardware tests but the tech said it should not take that long to boot so he used the Smart Utility. It showed the hard drive was having major read issues and he felt it needed to be replaced.  Apple no longer stocks the 160 GB HD's that came in the MBP so they will be replacing it with a 500 GB drive. The store was slammed with iPhone 5 buyers so they could not replace while I waited but promised to have it back to me by 2PM today.

     

    Happiness is AppleCare. I hope the new hard drive will speed up the MacBook Pro.  It was interesting to note it took a 3rd party utility to show the hard drive was about to fail

    Replacing the hard drive FIXED the problem.  Thanks to the guy at the Genuis Bar that spotted a failing hard drive.
