Q: Retina Macbook Pro WiFi and Bluetooth issue

Hey all,

i'd be really thankful for some info on the following issue :

i've got a Retina Macbook Pro and a Bluetooth Sound System from Logitech. The System connects to Macbook via Bluetooth which always works fine. Connecting to internet via WiFi works fine as well. The problem occurs when i use both WiFi and Bluetooth simultaneously : there seems to be some kind of interference, which makes my internet either go down completely or become very slow. This issue is not that nasty, but I'd expect a $2300 machine to work perfectly. So my question is : is this problem known for all of new Retina Macbooks or is it just my unit? In case it's just my unit, i'd still have a chance of exchanging it for a new one. But i'd like to know for sure where this problems comes from. I'd also be very thankful for every other solution you can think of.

Thanks in advance

It seems to be a problem with all Retina MBPs. Your only option is to return it and wait for Apple to fix the issue.

If all that have this issue do not return their MBPs Apple will never fix it.

Apparently you're not alone - see the threads under "More Like This" at the right.

The problem is that i need this Laptop every day. So returning it and waiting for a fix is not an option, since it's not sure how long it would take Apple to fix it, is it? Is it confirmed information that it's an issue for all Retina Macbooks? Or would another unit maybe work better??

I think that if were an issue on all MBP-R's we'd be hearing a lot more about it... but, as it is, we're hearing enough about it to know that it is an issue. If you don't want to return your machine - and if you're past the 14-day 'no questions asked' return policy - you may want to see if there is any software 'fix' in Mountain Lion, which should be out in the next couple of weeks (if not sooner). If ML doesn't fix the problem, you're still under warranty so your machine could be repaired.

However, if you're still within 14-days of purchase, I would return it.

My retina MBP is doing this as well. I started noticing that when downloading a large file, the connection would drop out and the files would sit while the download speed kept dropping. But it would usually kick back in again after 2-3 minutes. After reading these forums, I have confirmed that this happens every time the MBP picks up my bluetooth magic mouse. If I turn bluetooth off, start downloading a file, and turn bluetooth on while still downloading, the download will drop out every time. And, pings shoot up from 2-5 ms to 15-100 ms when turning bluetooth back on.

I'm hoping Mountain Lion can somehow provide a software fix to this problem.

I don't know Clinton, I'm not so convinced the problem isn't widespread... Does anyone have the a retina MBP that is NOT experiencing this problem?

Do you guys have a dual band wireless router that you can test your MBPr with ? If you hold down the option key and click on the WiFI Menu Extra, note down the channel number. (If this is between channe 1 and 11, then you are on the 2.4 Ghz network).

Bluetooth should only affect 2.4 Ghz, so if you have a dual band router and you use the 5 Ghz network to connect your WiFi network, you should not see this issue happening anymore.

But if you do see the issue when using a 5 Ghz network too, then this has nothing to do with Bluetooth.

Ah, I think my router is only 2.4 GHz. It only goes through channel 11 and no 802.11n. And yes, when I option-click the wifi icon I see channel 9 (2.4 GHz). However, if I can find a 5.0 GHz network to test on, I'll definitely do that and see what the results are. Thanks for the info.

Me too, Macbook Retina Pro 2.6 using 10.8 Mountain Lion connecting to Wireless N Network on Belkin derivative router.

    No problems.

Turn on Bluetooth and watch packets drop, speed drop to about 5% of normal if anything.

Tried different networks, B, G, Closer to Router, force channels 1, 6, 8, 11 but nothing helps other than turn bluetooth back off.

Anyone on MBR not having this problem?

What make router model are you guys using ? And what signal strength do you guys see this issue at ? Hold down the Option key and click on the WiFi Menu Extra to look at the RSSI Info.

    Thanks wifiguru

Happens with my Belkin Derivitive (iinet Bob device), Linksys WAG 320N, My Nokia Lumia 800 WiFi, Whatever MacDonalds use and a Cisco AP (Model unknown).

Strength between -40 and -90, worse impact on poor signal strength but I can get the same problem less than 2 metres from the AP.

    B, G, N all same effect.  Channels 1, 6, 8, 11 all same effect.

    Update on my post.

Got Airport Express today to try it out.  Configured it to have different names on 5GHZ and 2.4 and when using the 2.4, exact same problem.  When using the 5GHZ problem does not exhibit.  Of course the trade off is network range.

Ok but that does not solve the problem, it is a work around. This should not happen. Systems are defective.

I exactly have the same issue.

When BT is on Wifi drop... MPBr with Mountain Lion, do you think it's an hardware issue or will it be perhaps solved with a soft update?
