Q: Snow Leopard Application Disc Error Anyone?
I just performed a fresh install of Snow Leopard on a 2010 iMac. Then I attempted to install the Applications Install DVD for iLife, etc. The installer kept failing immediately after picking the disc and options you wanted. Tried copying the install DVD to the hard drive in case there was a problem with the optical drive or media. Verified the copy via the diff command in the terminal. The installer still didn't work. Even tried a different disc with roughly the same version of iLife from a 2010 MacBook Pro. Nothing but increasing frustration.
I then decided to look at the installer log. Most of it looked "normal", not that I have looked at many of these logs, but the following message struck me as odd -
"The package “UGLoc.pkg” is untrusted." Underlying Error=(Error Domain=NSOSStatusErrorDomain Code=-2147409654 UserInfo=0x120dd9620 "The operation couldn’t be completed. CSSMERR_TP_CERT_EXPIRED"
After some research, I discovered the error stems from an expired cyrtography certification. Apparently this effects some older versions of xCode as well.
Was rather annoyed that my restoration disc shipped with a $1700 computer has an expiration date. Guess it's the age of disposable computing now and I should have been installing Mountain Lion instead.
Anyway, I didn't come to complain, but to offer a solution for anyone else who is running into this issue after a fresh install. The "fix" is rather easy.
1.)Go into your system preferences under date and time.
2.)Uncheck "Set date and time automatically".
3.)Set the date back to before the cert expires. I used some random date in 2010 to be safe. The installer should work correctly now.
4.)After installation, just reset your date to the current date or check "Set date and time automatically" then connect to the internet.

A quick update to mark this as solved in case that helps anyone.
I would also like to add, that after I got everything installed from the restore discs, I used Software Update to get all the updates for my system. In the massive list of updates there appeared to be a small update that may also resolve this issue (it was rather vague, but stated that it was a fix that addressed software installation issues under 10.6.8). Silly me for wanting to complete my install from physical media before updating online.
I'm not going to test that method since my system is up and running at this point. If anyone else who has this issue when doing a restore would like to try Software Update before the Application Disc, please update this thread with your results as this may be helpful for others. Thanks.
