Q: Preview's Markup/Highlight function

Hello all, i don't know if I'm the only one making a big fuss about this but i hate the markup/highlight function of Preview in Mountain Lion. it's now comparable to microsoft word's higlight fcn. Err, the colors are too vivid/dark/sharp (i'm not sure of the right term, sorry). at first, i thought it was printer messing up but when i printed another file, which i annotated using the old version of Preview (Snow Leopard), the colors were better. I also hate that orange is not in the default selection of colors.

Hmm, sorry if this is a lame issue, but I use the annotating features of Preview a lot when studying.

Well, that's one by my count.

The only difference that I can see is that the highlight in Mountain Lion is larger and easier to see

    than in Snow Leopard.

Perhaps it is a printer problem.

The new hightlight seem much easier to use now. At first, I didn't even notice that you could change the highlight color in Snow Leopard. You can, but it's clunky. The new callouts in Mountain Lion are much better.

Sorry, I don't see it at all. From my perspective Mountain Lion's Preview is a significant improvement from Snow Leopard.

So, how do you actually select orange for the marker? It was the default colour when I starter highlighting and now cannot find it anymore so have half of the document highlighted in orange and half in blue!

In Snow Leopard preview, you have to click the highlight tool and then you can change the color using the color tool. Any change of color requires those two steps. In the newer Preview, you can set the highlight color in one step. You can't however, pick orange at all. I double-checked and this part doesn't appear to be easily hackable.

Etresoft, if what you say is true, then explain how i highlighted in orange today under Mountain Lion: snapshot.jpg

As you can see I highlighted in orange and I swear this was done today under Mountain Lion.

This was possible maybe because the last time I used preview highligting tool was with Sleopard (or Lion) and I selected orange as default color? I don't know.

However, that option was still selected by default today when i highlighted a pdf in ORANGE (I repeaet: the orange markup was done today with Mountain Lion).

Then alas  I switched to yellow, and now cannot revert to orange anymore!

So this is possible, it is only a matter of understanding how.

In Mavericks now there is no way. You are stuck with 5 colours. Whoever made that decision...

Does anyone know if there has been any tangible progress on the Mavericks issue of now only being allowed to use five markup colours instead of any one you want due to the culling of the colour picker tool?

This is really limiting if you have been using muliple markup colours in your PDF documents and then suddenly only have five with which to choose from. I personally, and forgive my language, think it was a very stupid move on Apple's part to do something like that. It only serves to irritate its customers at the end of the day. I know it's a minor issue, but it's a ridiculous change to make. As Nadegeous said above, "whoever made that decision..." - "... should be given a very hard slap."

I have now filed a bug report with Apple so that should be in the Preview team's issue tracking tool for the next few years before it gets looked at

Thank you. Can't see any reason for this backwards move. And I have to agree with the first post in this thread, the 5 colours are too saturated making the highlighted text difficult to read in certain size and lighting conditions. If we could at least change the tint or alpha.

I'm just adding to the noise, I know.

See Re: Re: Highlight text & remove in Mail for how to add additional colors for TextEdit. Never tired it in Preview.
