Have you installed the latest version of Sophos? If so, this is something you'll need to discuss with Sophos tech support. (If you're using their free software, which I don't think includes any support, try the Sophos forums.) Unfortunately, I haven't tested Sophos in ML yet, and there aren't that many other people who will admit to using anti-virus software here, because they generally get raked over the coals by people who believe Mac users should never, ever install anti-virus software.

Outdated versions of Sophos are also suspected of causing crashes on Mountain Lion, as HERE.

This is a bug with the latest version of Sophos for Mountain Lion. But, in general this so called Mountain Lion compatible Sophos isn't compatible it has caused slow downs and other issues for users. I installed the latest version of Sophos after doing a clean install of Mountain Lion and a lot of problems occurred and then were completely fixed after uninstalling Sophos. I loved Sophos in Lion so I say just wait until a new version comes out then install Sophos on your Mountain Lion.
