Did you do the "deauthorize all" computers from the Account Information screen in the iTunes Store? Click on your Apple ID in the iTunes Store screen, and give your password, to get to your Account Information screen. There is an button there for Deauthorize All. If that's not how you did it earlier, try it now, then authorize your one computer again.

Yes this is happening to me - when I try to sync my iphone it still says I have 5 computers. Should I create a new Apple ID? I'd really prefer to not do that.

Do you actually have FIVE computers that you actively use with your one iTunes Store account (your Apple ID)? (The iPhone does not count as one of those five computers.)
If not, you probably "accumulated" those five computers over the years, as you bought new ones to replaces old ones, and you never deauthorized the old ones when you stopped using them. The new ones were added to the count (authorized for your Apple ID), while the old ones were never dropped. So, the iTunes Store thinks you have five computers now, even if you only have one or two.
If you still have access the old computers, you can log in to the iTunes Store using the old computer and deauthorize it. The Deauthorize This Computer command is under the Store menu in iTunes.
If you no longer have access the old computers, you can use the method I described in my earlier reply. On the Account Information screen in iTunes, there is a button to Deauthorize All. This will deauthorize ALL computers currently authorized to play content from your Apple ID. After you do this, you need to authorize the computer (or computers) you actually use currently, so that the total number is less than five.

I deactivated my computers through my account and then reactivated my laptop but I still get a message that I have 5 computers max and the song I want to play cannot be activated

If you did not already, I would try quitting iTunes and launching it again (or even restarting your computer because part of iTunes may keep running even when you quit iTunes). Also, if you used the Deauthorize All command from the button on the Account Information screen (as described in my earlier reply), it's possible that Apple's server database needs to get updated in a way that is not immediate. So I would try waiting a few hours and then try to authorize your laptop again.
Question: You said you "reactivated" your laptop. Does that mean it was already one of your authorized computers before you gave the Deauthorize All command? Or is this a new computer that has never been authorized with your Apple ID (iTunes Store account)?
NOTE: Only older 128 kbps songs purchased from the iTunes Store had DRM, so if this song is a recent purchase (without DRM), it should play whether the computer is authorized for the Apple ID or not.
