On second try it is connected to the cloud. After I accessed a song from previous purchases with my older macbook pro, my account was unavailable on that platform as well.

Glad I found this thread. Brand new MBAir out of the box today and four hours spent trying to get iTunes Match and iTunes store to work. Plus two hours on the phone with Apple Support. They weren't any help and had me reload Mountain Lion. No one even mentioned this issue. UGH

Okay... iTunes just crashed on my pc while trying to sync my iPod Touch. The only way to update my iPhone or iPad(it failed AGAIN) was to download the apps to my iPod Touch first, transfer "purchases" to my pc, then sync the other devices. But iTunes crashed during the sync. Trying again now.
Worked with the iPod Touch.
Worked with the iPad 2.
Worked with the iPhone!
It's convoluted, but it's a good temporary solution. As long as you don't want to buy any iPad apps...

Issue still persists...hopefully it works tomorrow. I am trying to download an entire album and it doesnt work. I did have success with a single song though, pretty weird. I wonder if they are experiencing a server issue.

I believe that they have disable iCloud because of that hacking of a former Gozmodo employee's account, and the subsequent wiping of all of his devices by said hacker. A warning would've been nice!

Ok, I also had this problem for several days on my home Mac Pro running 10.8.
However, I could make purchases and download updates on my work machine (also 10.8) and on my iOS devices.
Looking at my account details on the home machine I tried to make changes to some details and got an error message that said something to the effect that my changes could not be saved as my account had been modified by something else in that period.
So I restarted my Mac - something that rarely happens - and everything works, problem gone.
Just out of interest has anyone else done this?
Also wondering if when in iTunes, logging out of my iTunes store account and back could have fixed it. Anyone tried this?

I'm running iTunes on a pc with Windows Vista Ultimate. I did try the restart, to no avail. I did restarts on all of my iDevices with no luck. Now they seem to work, except that I keep getting Apple ID Password prompts at random intervals while using my iPhone. It doesn't matter what I'm doing, it just keeps happening.
I'm trying a sync now. Hopefully that will solve the issue.

Still trying to repair the fallout from this debacle. Now a song I was trying to download yesterday has appeared twice in my iPhone, but with one of the copies non-removable, with no artwork. I tried a reset with no luck. So now I have unsynced all music and am in the middle of a resync. With over 5000 songs and videos, this is a real pain, not to mention time-consuming.
Please Apple Inc., warn us next time...
