I'd love to hear from someone who has a crash problem like this and goes to the Genius Bar about it. I've not had time to do that (3hr trip, assuming the GB doesn't take the rest of the day). I'm having the same trouble.

Though there's documentaiton on apps like Chrome causing these crashes, it's driver related and happens with other apps too. You can blame a dozen apps for the crash, or look at the Operating System that SHOULD NEVER CRASH!

If your OS crashes because an app has a problem, that's just an OS bug that needs fixed.

If someone has more news, please share. As of now, I'm assuming this is a somewhat widespread bug, perhaps hardware failure. But, it looks like a bad video driver to me. And, it seems Apple is either unaware or uninterested in admitting to the problem at the moment.

I did read where someone suggested turning off automatic graphics switching. I did. We'll see if that helps.

OR there's some line in the application software that is not compatible with mountain lion, therefore it's google chrome not being able to catch up with the OS software and hence the cause of the crash.

I'm sorry Jerbz, but your statement is absolutely wrong.

imjasonn is correct in what he is saying. I said the same thing earlier in this thread.

The fundamental concept that you're missing is an understanding of "user mode" and "kernel mode". Applications like Google Chrome are user mode applications and therefore have no direct access to the hardware. The crashes we are seeing are kernel panics which are occurring in kernel mode. Therefore, either the kernel has a problem (which is doubtful because my wife's MBA has never crashed in Lion or Mountain Lion) or the drivers (which also have kernel mode access) have a problem. I suspect the problem is in the HD4000 driver. Disabling automatic graphics switching results in only the dedicated GPU running (and thus nVidia's driver). The problem could also exist as a bug in the kernel where it does the actual graphics switching. In any case, this is definitly a problem that Apple needs to fix. Google could certainly dance around the bug, but that doesn't change the fact that the bug needs to be fixed!

Sophos completely uninstalled. Evernote, Mail, Calendar, Safari running and crashed. Granted it took 3 days instead of 1 but still crashing. Here is the log. Thoughts? Thanks for your help.

I don't have a retina.  I have a mid-2010 model with the ram in clips.  My laptop was flawless then one day, of course on a trip to my home office when I tried to boot one morning I got the panic screen.   I cycled power and got it again.  On the third try it booted but ran about 15 minutes.  I picked up the laptop and it paniced again.

This time I restarted but did not move the laptop and it ran all day.  I picked it up and it paniced almost instantly.

Fearing the worst I went back in our shop and removed the bottom cover.  I did this, showing my age here, because often when PC's and other computers I've owned over the years suddenly start to act funny and crash you reseat connectors and ram.  So I re-seated my ram.  I cleaned the contacts plugged it back in.  The laptop has not missed a day since.

So on the new retina everything is soldered to the board.  BUT that doesn't mean the solder joint is great.  If you'd removed all the software, tried a fresh install and you are still crashing it might be time for a visit to GB and arrange for an exchange.

    Just my 2c...

No added kexts, so whatever is going on is all Apple. And what is happening is, ...

    panic(cpu 6 caller 0xffffff7f8853fc85): NVRM[0/1:0:0]: Read Error

(An error when attempting to read NVDIA Graphics RAM.)

This looks like a graphics Hardware problem. The graphics processor and Display RAM is not replaceable separately, so you probably require a motherboard swap. Take a printout of the panic report (or a link to it) with you when you go to the genius Bar. Be sure you have backups because your Mac will probably be sent for a depot repair.

You can also call AppleCare, but if your 90 days is up, they will want a credit Card number (generally not charged if you have a real problem that requires service). They can send you a prepaid Fedex box and you can send your Mac directly to the depot if you prefer.

I do not speak for Apple computer, but I am pretty sure that is what is going on with yours.

Thanks for your help. I purchase apple care on almost all my apple mobile devices. Luckly I have it covered on my MBPr; also think it's within 90 days. Either way looks like I'll be on the phone with Apple tomorrow and will push to have it sent in for repair or replacement.

My new MBRD running Mountain Lion refused today to accept any mouse clicks, i.e. I could move the cursor, but clicks were not recorded. Call Apple care, they said go to the store. Shut down my machines for 10 m., restarted and it worked. Called apple care, and got advice as to how to reset SMC Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) and PRAM Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM

So far so good, it works... we'll see for how long.

Went to the local Genius Bar, they replaced my MBPR with a new one, I've upgraded to Mountain Lion, and running all kinds of developer apps, watching videos, and ONLY USING CHROME BROWSER, and I've had NO CRASHES SINCE.

I've had absolutely no problems since they replaced my laptop. I identified the problem as being the onboard video, they replaced my laptop, and it's run like a top ever since. I'm afraid this looks like a hardware issue.

    Rolando Mota-

Although it may seem that you are using Safari, ONLY, your Mac OS X kernel has crashed after being modified with the following additions:

    net.tunnelblick.tun          1.0

    com.squirrels.airparrot.framebuffer          3

    com.squirrels.driver.AirParrotSpeakers          1.7

If you want Apple to take your problem seriously, you will need to un-install these modifications and replicate the kernel panics in a kernel that has not been modified.

Thanks for the quick response, I have airparrot installed but it wasnt running when it happened, unless it starts by itself when i turn on the computer. I dont have any tunnelblick applications even installed, i google tunnelbllick and i dont have a vpn service installed in my computer, i know it says that in the log, how come that could cause it?

    cheers!

Those are kernel extensions. They modify the most fundamental portion of Mac OS X. And that is the part that has crashed.

If you have a problem in only one Application, only one Application will crash. You have taken out the whole machine, and the changes you made by installing extensions to the kernel are suspect.
