Mac OS XIf you use the manual method to add songs to a 4th gen iPod shuffle, by dragging songs to the shuffle in iTunes to load them, do the following to remove songs.
Select the shuffle in the iTunes sidebar, under DEVICES. Click the little triangle next to the shuffle, to "drop down" the iTunes media types (including playlists) that are on the shuffle (indented under the shuffle). Click on Music there.
Over to the right, you see a list of songs currently on the shuffle. Select the song(s) you want to remove from the shuffle, and hit the Delete key. You can select multiple items at the same time.
NOTE: It sounds like you have the shuffle set to Manually manage music on the shuffle's Summary tab in iTunes. If you are actually using automatic syncing to load music, please post back.
