Q: Frequent Panic NVRM[0/1:0:0]: Read Error 0x00000100

I've sent my MBP i7 mid-2010 for repair with the following frequent and intermittent kernel panic to no avail: panic(cpu 2 caller 0x9cdc8f): NVRM[0/1:0:0]: Read Error 0x00000100: ... to no avail.

I happen to have subscribed to AppleCare for this machine but this did not make any difference. The approved repair center I dealt with just reformatted the HD per Apple's support instructions (twice !) and were unable to reproduce the panic. I called the Apple support folks in Ireland directly with the incident # and got told that there was basically nothing wrong with my machine and that this was bound to be caused by non-Apple software (mind you, the support guy I talked to didn't even know that XCode was an Apple product - sic). I however believe this is very likely due to a faulty NVidia video card on the logic board.

Has this happened to someone else? How did you get resolution? Right now I am stuck with an unreliable machine and seem unable to get it fixed. Any help would be VERY appreciated.

Thank you,

François

Yep, same here. Took it in and fixed for free, and they even replaced the display for some reason (not with retina of course). By the way, better hurry coz I think your mid-2012 MBP is only covered for 2 years.

    back, cause it happened again.

after a short period of not being used (although not in sleep mode), moved mouse, screen saver turned off, pressed play on itunes, saw my photoshop page and....boom. blackscreen with the looping of the last 2 bars played in itunes....

unfortunately my 2 years are now up (although i did take it to the genius bar to report the problem before they were up). showed them my logs too but was sent away with the suggestion it was a software problem.....

After a while after using GFX Card Status set to integrated only with mostly success, it eventually stopped helping all together. It got to the point where my computer would completely turn off after only being on for a few seconds. I brought it into my local Apple Store (Winnipeg, Canada). The genius preformed a hardware test, which of course it passed, but because it kept crashing all the time (crashed about 5 times while I was there) it was obvious something was wrong. I brought in a copy of the error report, and the genius read it and immediately knew what was wrong with it: the logic board! Surprise! Luckily I have Apple Care, so I was able to get it fixed for free (A cost of about $530 or so, I believe). It took less than 2 working days to fix, and since then my computer has been as good as new! They even replaced my battery for me! That was about a month ago, and I'm so happy to be able to run my computer without having to worry about it crashing all the time...

If you have this problem, bring your computer into an Apple store, and bring a copy of the error report! I know some others have had problems there, but I had great service at mine. It's worth a try, you've really got nothing to lose at this point.

    MacDuncan & All...

My MBP Mid-2010 17" had its Logic Board (aka CPU/Mother-board) replaced for $free after an intense month of assessment of "Capture Data" analysis by the Apple Engineers in the USA and reruns of the extensive hardware test to reconfirm the hardware error: 4SNS/1/40000000: Tm0P-60.625. Sometimes, more than one pass is required to invoke the hardware error.

Also remember that the local Genius here in Australia was only able to accept MBP Mid-2010 15" models covered by TS4088. When my case number 325362188 was finally endorsed by Apple Engineering, it was finally accepted without question. But there is no mention of this finding extending to a new Technical Service bulletin covering MBP Mid-2010 17" models in addition to the 15". Nor was there any mention of the "official" root cause of the problem.

Now since this MBP's return 2 weeks ago, I've failed to find any problem, upgraded to Mountain Lion and are proceeding to give this MBP a graphics caning via Final Cut Pro and other applications in the 50-days I have left as a repair warranty.

You may be all interested in the variety of panics (different CPU callers) that I recorded in just 1 week and escalated just prior to Apple Engineering finally endorsing my $free repair:

    (1) 2 x panic(cpu 0 caller 0x9d4c97): NVRM[0/1:0:0]: Read Error 0x0061002c

    (2) 9 x panic(cpu 2 caller 0x9d4c97): NVRM[0/1:0:0]: Read Error 0x00000100

    (3) 7 x panic(cpu 1 caller 0x9d4c97): NVRM[0/1:0:0]: Read Error 0x00000100

    (4) 8 x panic(cpu 0 caller 0x9d4c97): NVRM[0/1:0:0]: Read Error 0x00000100

    (5) 2 x panic(cpu 2 caller 0x9d4c97): NVRM[0/1:0:0]: Read Error 0x00000000

    (6) 1 x panic(cpu 0 caller 0x10972a0): "AGC GPU REGISTER RESTORE FAILED : rdar://7254528"

The last panic was caught after a switch by gfxCardStatus back to Integrated Graphics that distorted and tore the screen into pieces, then the freeze and panic recorded on reboot. Ironically, Discrete Graphics via the NVidia card was OK when the MBP was in this "mode".

My MBP seemed to have its "panics" evolve and move to different areas over time. It ran for months on the Integrated Graphics only until catching a panic on bootup when it always made the switch to Discrete. Particular applications also preferred Discrete therefore catching one unaware of impending panic doom.

In summary, my investment of time on this issue alone is in the vicinity of 3 man-weeks since February 2012. If it was all possible to troubleshoot, escalate, test etc. in one block, then maybe just a 3 or 4 days. Apple would have lost scores of supporters though as this MBP died while giving a presentation to nearly 100 people. There was no person who did not have empathy for my case. So that represents good-will business lost potentially worth thousands of AU$. Therefore, while not a good investment of my time, it was purely the principle and my persistence with the issue that eventuated with a successful outcome.

A wish anyone out there who still has this problem the best of luck getting it fixed soon. Eventually, this particular thread will stop. The 2-year extended warranty under TS4088 is running-out of time for many Mid-2010 15" and 17" models that might have this problem.

    Good luck and Cheers,

    Michael (aka Bikegreeny)

On a long shot, is there a way to test my fan?  I don't hear it running anymore and wonder if this could be why I'm getting so many CPU panics.  Used to hear it humming along.  Not for some time now, though.  Might be a heat problem for the graphics chips?

I'm also having the graphics switching kernel panics since upgrading to Mountain Lion. I'd gone through all third party software before finding this thread. I've since installed the gfxCarStatus and found my Mid-2010 15" MacBook Pro has had no kernel panic if it is forced to stay on the nVidia card.

I realize I am parroting a lot of the other comments in the thread, I'm just here to voice my problem is the same as the rest!

C'mon Apple! This is a huge problem!!!!

And just as soon as I write my post, the kernel panics have returned. I'l be a bit more detailed this time around to see if anyone has any input and supply my latest crash log.

    MacBook Pro 15" Core i7 2.66 Ghz Mid-2010

    OS X 10.8.1 Build 12B19

In main HDD bay is a 1 TB Western Digital HDD

DVD drive has been removed and replaced with a 40 GB Intel 320 SSD (This is the OS drive)

Kernel panics have only begun since the upgrade to Mountain Lion. I can't remember the last time I had a kernel panic before Mountain Lion.

I have gone through my third party software, one at a time since the kernel panics began. I have removed the following:

    S.M.A.R.T. Reporter

    LogMeIn Ignition/Free

    Dropbox

    iStat Menus

    Teleport

Any third party kext files that were listed in the crash logs

Any other random applications that were not needed any more

I've tried my best to get my OS X install down to it's bare bones, and it doesn't seem to be fixing anything. I'd also read about "wake for bluetooth access" being linked to kernel panics, but have had bluetooth turned off for weeks now. No Wi-Fi use, always ethernet. I've turned off Time Machine, in an attempt to test that too.

I can not boot into safe mode or Apple hardware test for some reason, not sure if it's because of the FileVault encryption on the drive or not. I've never had to boot under either with this MacBook Pro before, so I can't really attest to that working before.

The crash log has always listed the reason for the kernel panic as:

    NVRM[0/1:0:0]: Read Error 0x00000100: CFG 0xffffffff 0xffffffff 0xffffffff, BAR0 0xc0000000 0xffffff81282d9000 0x0a5480a2, D0, P3/4

I believe the NVRAM has to do with the nVidia card, but as I stated before, I've been using the gfxCardStatus and have been experiencing panics under both cards, even with graphics card switching disabled.

The number of kernel panics is getting out of control. I had hoped for a resolution with 10.8.1, but was left in kernel panic ****, sometimes up to ten kernel panics a day. I believe I'll have to revert back to 10.7 soon if no one finds a resolution!!!! Which would suck, because I'm loving the enw features of 10.8!!!

Anyone better at reading kernel panic crash logs than I am?

    Hey thomasfromcarpentersville,

I've had this issue for a while now and I think it has something to do with the graphics card crapping out. I have a dual monitor setup and it will eventual black out on me if I have photoshop open while running a youtube vid.

That said, I've found that the heat seems to be a huge factor so I bought a laptop cooling pad. It's just a couple extra fans and it doesn't solve the problem but it helps tremendously. I found my cooling pad at ROSS for $6.00. Hope this helps!

Fixed!! Took my mid 2010 15" MBP to the Apple Store. After waiting for my appointment time twice...another story...I meet with my assigned Genius and tell him about my NVRM problem and he was unimpressed. I told him about TS4088 and he dissappears for about 20 minutes while he "read" up on it. To make a long story short, he was not interested in seeing my printouts from my Kernal Panics, but he would keep the Mac and run tests.

I get a call a couple of days later and was told my Mac was ready to be picked up. I get to the store and I ask about the testing and solution and they found no errors at all. I ask if they tested with an external monitor attached. This Genius also dissappears for a few minutes to "look" for the testing information. Comes back out and says it was not tested with an external monitor attached and says they will test it overnight. I leave the store and on my way to the car when my phone rings and it is my latest Genius telling me they will replace the logic board. I can imagine they plugged the external monitor in as soon as I left and the Kernal Panic happened. LOL.

A couple of days later I get another call that my Mac is ready so I go to the Apple store again. Am handed a paper that has a price for repair but am told just sign that you've picked it up and we're done. Apple picked up the cost of the logic board replacement.

No more Kernal Panics! Been running smooth for a couple of weeks. Plug my Cintiq in every morning, awaken it after lunch everyday...all the actions really required to trigger a fault and have been blessed with none!

Take your Macs to the Genius Bar and it will get fixed. It may take some effort on your part but it is more than worth it.

I took mine to an Apple store in the US...Indianapolis to be correct.

Suggest to your Genius that they run the test they way you experience the problem...with an external monitor attached...my last Genius called me within minutes of my leaving the store after requesting such testing on mine.
