i dont know if this will help but try charging with a cable that isnt a firewire accessory. i have  the same problem. i use my sisters kindel wall outlet connecter for my apple USB chord. ever since i updated i have been getting that message.although i havnt been getting the alert when i charge from my pc my advice is to try and use apple charging accesories only . also make sure that the USB chord is ok.

You can find them on ebay for 1$ / pair. You get one silicone plug for the headphone jack and one plug for the charging port. Just search ebay for  "iPhone silicone plug". If you keep them on all the time, and only take them off, when you use the headphones or the charger, you won't have any problems with dust or moisture.

    Hello All

I am new here but I started with the original iPhone and now we have 2 3GSs.

With the original phone I used a car adapter and got this accesory not supported, but it always charged in the car.

Fast forward to the 3gs: I just replaced the battery and the dock because it had battery charge retention issues and no sound.  The repair took care of these problems and my standard apple charger worked for 3 days.  It then decided that it was not a supported charger!

Now the important point is this:  same charger and cable but now connected to the other 3GS or the original, charged with no problem!  I have 2 of these chargers and they both behave in identical fashion!

All the phones were updated to the latest OS.

The phone with the new battery is very slowly charging now.  I brushed the dock contacts and my next step is to find eye of newt and mix up a brew.

do not get me started on genius bar and the quality of the MacBook Pro and broken bezels

Thanks for that, just been on ebay like you said and ordered a pair. I didn't  realize that you got a silicone head phone socket cover as well  so thats good. I'm probably going to keep the plugs in most of the time so they should be exactly what I'm looking for. Thanks again,

    Giant peeje,

I got a splash of water (a raindrop) into the charging port / dock connector of my iphone 4. I started to get the "charging is not supported with this accessory" on all my charging stations - iclock, laptop, etc. but the phone would charge sporadically. I took it to the apple store and they confirmed water damage. They offered no repair solution only that I could replace the phone for $149.99 and not impact my upgrade. Which is coming up in a couple of months. Because the phone would charge  (if I jiggled the power cord just right!) I decided to just live with it until I could upgrade. Then in a few days it started to not charge at all even if I jiggled the power cord!!

I looked into replacing the dock connector, but decided that I didn't want to risk doing that myself and by the time I received the parts the battery would die out. I don't have another phone to use in the meantime, so I figured my only option was to replace the phone for $149.99 as suggested by the Apple "Genius". On my way to the Apple store at my local mall. I pass by The Tech Center and stop to ask if they have a solution. $59.99 and 20 minutes later I have a brand new dock connector and the phone is charging like a champ!!

Why doesn't the Apple store offer these repairs??? Love Apple products but they have the worst customer service / repairs. The "Genius" bar solution is always - just get a new one. Right on to The Tech Center! Next time I have a problem with any of my Apple products that are out of warranty, will go straight to them. They're the real Geniuses!!

My 2 year old iPhone 4 started displaying this message about 1 week ago.  I changed the battery, cables, cleaned the connector, restored to original settings, etc. but nothing worked.  Tonight I tried the simple fix on YouTube as suggested by Sraafat and the phone is now charging.  Not sure if I will need to redo the fix each time I want to charge but this will have to do for now.  Shame that Apple isn't supporting customers on this issue.  Here is the link to the YouTube fix.

I found that when I plug in the USB connector to the MacBook Pro or to the wall charger as far as it will go I get this message. However, if I only put it in far enough to make the connection, I don't get the message. See if this works for you. It is frustrating isn't it?

I have one Apple charger and one cheap charger ( $1) from Amazon.

    Apple charger works always.

But cheap charger works time to time (fifty-fifty may be).

This sitaution started after update to IOS to 5.1.1

It is very interesting isn't it?

Any case - thanks for your time!

    P.S. Same for MarieC!

The You Tube fix didn't work for me, either, at first. Then I cleaned the dock connector of my iPhone 3GS using tissue paper soaked in a window cleaning spray fluid ("Windolene" in UK) and tried again. And it worked, to my great relief! Good luck!

This is a postscript to my earlier post.  I thought I had solved the problem, because the error message disappeared.  But actually the problem was still there and my iPhone 3GS (over 2 years old) wouldn't charge, trying different chargers. The local repair shop fixed the problem. It wasn't the battery, but the electronics which control the charging.  Took one hour and £35 ($50).
