option-brightness: Display Preference Pane
command-decrease-brightness: Change display mode (only on revised fn keyboard layout on Alu. keyboards, newer MBP/MBs?
Apart from that, you've gotta go into the display preferences. It's really annoying, I know.

Thank you very much! I knew the apple community was a active community, but never had expected to get an answer this fast! I am quite the noob with all the shortcuts so thank you for telling. For me the option-brightness works perfect!

The keyboard shortcuts also work on my Late 2008 non-unibody MBP, so my guess is that they will work for the vast majority of users.

I can confirm this shortcut also works on the 2011 iMac using external monitors via thunderbolt!

Unfortunately, I still access to the menu monitors menu like it was in 10.7. I use PowerPoint (or Keynote) in presentation mode, with an external video projector. In this mode, I could use the menu and change resolutions to correct the axial ratio. If I use the keyboard shortcuts to bring up the Display preferences, PowerPoint presentation mode is exited, and although I change the resolution, switching back to Powerpoint unsets it. I too vote for it to return for power users.

I also missed the feature so badly that I wrote a replacement for the original monitors menu and put it on the Mac App Store:
Hope that helps some people out!

Yes, thank you very much MiG_Tho.
By the way... Is your username a reference to the Russian fighter plane manufacturer?

Thank you so much for writing this replacement. Still have to wonder what they were thinking over at Apple. Monitor menu is essential.
