Jul 20, 2012 4:09 AM in response to dale275by Jainser,Yeah same happened to me today. Machine is 1 month over year warrenty as well!! Typical. All my life I've had PC's finally make the (expensive) switch to Mac and this. From What I read it's a £500 or so fix. No good with solder so although there seems to be a DIY fix no good for me.
Anyway rant/moan over. Needed to get it off my chest!
Thanks Apple.

Jul 20, 2012 4:28 AM in response to Jainserby John-Paul May,that's truly bad luck! you should scream at Apple loudly and tell them you changed from Windows.
FTR it is a **** rare problem, but still an incredible pain in teh arse.
Consider -- maybe a local electrician could apply the Solder fix ? For 100 quid or so.
Sorry...

Jul 25, 2012 7:07 AM in response to John-Paul Mayby Jainser,Thanks for reply Jon-Paul,
Think I'd need a local who is computer tech type person - will ask around. It really isn't good enough spend over £2000 on a machine then it goes wrong 13 months later. Then they want to charge me £35+vat over the phone to tell me I'm screwed
Is there a way to get in touch with Apple without having to pay to talk to someone? (other than a shop visit nearest shop is around an hour away so if there is no other choice I guess thats my only choice)
THought I'd could live with it but it's not just dim it's flickering as well.

Jul 28, 2012 5:54 PM in response to Jainserby FFS48,Jainser, I would either make the call or make the drive. This is a well known problem, Apple may not talk about it much, but well known. You may have even noticed the dimming before the warranty ran out but did not know it would lead to a serious flickering problem - so tell Apple that. When I had the problem you are experiencing, after a phone call, Apple replaced my iMac free of charge. Give it a try!

Aug 7, 2012 8:39 PM in response to Eric Fauqueby PuNiTTT,Same problem just happened to me tonight. I made the mistake to purchase it from best buy, but I am within the 1 yr. warranty. (Purchase 11/17/11) I can still take it to an apple store and have them repair it for free right? I'm pretty sure they won't come to my house & I don't mind taking it there as I still have the original box.

Aug 13, 2012 3:37 AM in response to FFS48by Jainser,Well I took the machine down to the Apple store and now my wallet is £400 lighter but it's back!!
Can't fault the staff in the store (Brent Cross) very helpful and friendly but am still annoyed at the product. Had no choice other than to get it fixed really.
As a gesture they dropped the labour charge which was very nice and much appreciated.
Still thumbs down though for the quality of a £2000 machine (well now it's £2400!!)
I've lost my enthusiasm for Apple products a little now - shame.

Aug 13, 2012 6:17 AM in response to dale275by Pigeon7,I can't believe these posts! Arrived here after I did a google search after my work office 2011 iMac screen went "to the dark side" just out of warranty of course. Took it in last week for an expensive repair( don't have the bill yet but will run into at least $500 apparently). Today, my home machine, purchased a couple of weeks before my work one has gone the same way. Started with flickering, now just plain dark! Repairer is authorised Apple repairer and tells me these are not acknowledged by Apple as faulty. Go figure? I have been an apple fan for some years now but have to say I have had more issues with my now 3 iMacs than I had in the last five years of my pc using days, and I also have to say that Toshiba were excellent to deal with when I did develop problems with my laptop. Shame Apple, simply not good enough in this day and age where the consumer is supposed to be King. Steve would be turning in his grave! Hard to recommend Apple to friends after this, but then I guess you don't really need little guys like me do you Apple.

Sep 1, 2012 4:49 PM in response to dale275by AirbrushJay,Finally was able to buy a brand-new 27 inch iMac, just two months ago in July 2012. A week ago I noticed that the left side of the screen was noticeably dimmer than the right. Then it started flickering back-and-forth the last couple days. I guess I'll see what AppleCare has to say about it as soon as I call them. I bought the machine loaded with everything that you can get on it. Including extra AppleCare.

Sep 1, 2012 5:44 PM in response to AirbrushJayby AirbrushJay,Just got off the phone with AppleCare. The tech had me turn my iMac off. Then turn it back on and right after I turned it on I would hold the option key, the command key, the P key and R key all together until it gave the start up tone twice then release them. So far it is working okay but time will tell. The tech said that combination was used to reset the display.

Oct 29, 2012 3:47 AM in response to dale275by nonnyscott,Hi
Same has Just happened to me on my work iMac just out of warranty 18 months old not happy at all.
My director is taking legal advise as this problem cant keep being ignored by Apple there are to many issues for it Not to be a known problem.
If you are reading this Apple I would reconsider your stance on this problem.

Oct 30, 2012 4:34 AM in response to dale275by Imagine Admin,I'm the IT Manger for a publisher in the UK and we use the 27" iMacs for our desingers.
I have had 8 of these screen back light failures and up until recently they were all within warranty, now the 9th has gone and it is just outside its warranty.
Enough people have said they have had the same issue and I know for a fact that someone in Apple looks at all the stats for AASC repairs and can see exactly how many of these units have failed in the same way!
I thought surely by now it would be an "Exchange and Repair Extension Program" but no we are still left to foot the bill for something which is clearly a manufacturing defect.
Want I want to know what the threshold is to become a "Exchange and Repair Extension Program" is and how close are we to it as I am sure there are many more cases that haven't been logged because of the associated cost to repair.
Come on Apple do the right thing please.

Oct 30, 2012 5:44 AM in response to Imagine Adminby John-Paul May,ImagineAdmin - that is a fascinating real-world report.
Thanks a lot for that info.
It sounds like a real problem developing.
For the record ..
you've probably heard it can be fixed by "bagning on it",
Kaos here .......
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4041042?start=0&tstart=0
actually identified the exact problem.
As a workaround, my sense is that an "old fashioned elctronics workshop" could fix the problem with a an old pocket knife and a $10 soldering iron, in a few minutes.
Possibly in an operation like yours it would be a viable approach, or you may even have an inhouse technician.
And it's a lot easier than messing around with Apple, having your hard drives erased, etc
What a nuisance. Thanks again for the report.
