When you say "hard reset," you are doing a Restore, correct?

This is a 3rd gen iPod?  You said "click wheel," but does it actually have a "touch wheel" (does not click), with four touch buttons on a row between the wheel and screen (that glow orange).  THAT is a 3rd gen iPod.  If it has a click wheel, it may be a 4th gen iPod.

It makes a difference for your question, because a 3rd gen iPod (although it has a dock connector) is designed to be used with FireWire, not USB.  If you connect a 3rd gen iPod using USB, it will not charge.  It may sync, if the battery is strong, but it will not Restore.  A 4th gen iPod should work with both USB and FireWire.
