If you can see your shared collection it's mean that Bonjour serivice is working well and it's not a network problem. So it's software, try ro reinstall iTunes on your notebook for lasted version (http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/).

I already installed the newest version of iTunes and it does not help at all. I am not a beginner when it comes to troubleshooting so I need to know if a netbook is incapable of playing movies fom a shared folder. Even when I play movies directly from the iTunes library on my netbook, it's jumpy and doesn't play properly.

Better solution is check you video driver at first, and availability of necessary video codec for that video format. As i understand you using Acer 250 with built-in Intel GMA, which can't support playing HD video over network (and directly too).
You watched HD or SD video? If SD - check and update (if necessary) your video driver here
