Q: Aperture won't work on new macbook pro retina

I need help so bad. I got my new mackbook pro yesturday and migrated Aperture to it from my old mac. It worked great yesturday but today it won't even launch. I trashed and downloaded 6 times from the APP store and have called support 3 times. Nothing they suggested works.

I have a 15" MACBOOK PRO retina with Mountain Lion, 2.6 i7, 16gb ram, 500 gb flash drive.

Any one have any ideas or have the same problem? I would so appreciate some advise.

Any chance you have installed Final Cut Express?

Thanks for the reply William. Yes, I did have it installed but I trashed it when talking to the 1st tech on the phone. She also had me trash Aperture and download it again with no success. The 2nd tech had me wipe out a bunch of additional files, trash Aperture and download again. No luck with that either. They had me trash aperture again and create another user account. Then download Aperture under that account. Still won't work.

I got fed up and called the nearest Apple store. I have an appointment on Thursday. I figure that I must have messed something up either when I migrated or with all the changes we made, my new computer is a mess.

If nothing else they can put everything back to the way it was when I got it. I tried to migrate from my old Mac and I now learn that I have a few thing that won't run on Mountain Lion, including Final Cut 4.  The guy that I talked on the phone to at the Apple store told me to just bring in my new and old computers and they will take care of everything. Can't beat that offer.

Anyway, I'm still open for ideas. I'd love to figure it out myself....with help from people like you.

    Thanks.....

Other folks have solved this frameworks issue.  The problem is that with 10.8 being new, there aren't any combo updaters you can install.

Did you ever run Aperture successfully on the machine before running Final Cut?  I would bet if you've removed Final Cut Express that you could just re-download and re-install Mountain Lion (should take about 30 minutes on a fast Internet connection) and all would be working OK.  You just wouldn't want to re-install FCE.  I don't know if there's an upgraded versio of it?  Or maybe FCP X is now the way forward.

You can leave Final Cut on the system but you will need to re-install the OS. If you have removed Final Cut but wish to keep it re-install it BEFORE reloading the OS.

As William wrote there are no combo updates for ML so you will need to download from the App Store unless you have made a USB stick installer when you first installed ML.

Aperture ran ok yesterday with final cut loaded on computer. I was even able to open FCE and use it after I did an update. Also did Aperture update at the same time. That's when Aperture stopped working. Then I tried FCE again but it stopped working. Apple tech didn't believe that FCE actually ran. Now...neither one work andFCE has been removed. Another download of Aperture was a failure again.

It is not an Aperture failure - installing Final Cut corrupts the system - as Frank Caggiano and William Lloyd explained - the installation replaces the "PluginManager" framework by a framework with the wrong architecture - look at the crashlog you posted; the problem is in your system library, not in the Aperture library.

    Dyld Error Message:

      Library not loaded: /Library/Frameworks/PluginManager.framework/Versions/B/PluginManager

      Referenced from: /Applications/Aperture.app/Contents/MacOS/Aperture

Reason: no suitable image found.  Did find:

/Library/Frameworks/PluginManager.framework/Versions/B/PluginManager: no matching architecture in universal wrapper

Both programs should run again, if you restore the framework by reinstalling the operating system. If you have a TimeMachine backup from the time before you installed Final Cut, you can try to restore the "PluginManager" from your backup.

Again....thanks for the reply's. As I said before, I was in the process of migrating so I didn't get to the point of setting up Time Machine yet. So I have no backup. For the suggestion of reloading the OS....Apple no longer includes the OS disks.

Also, Apple says FCE will not run on  ML. They also said they no longer support any version of FC older than FC 10.

I'm seeing that all of you are in agreement that a reload of the OS is what is needed but how do I do that without the disks? I am certainly no geek and I can usually find an answer to a problem some where (like here)  but this has me stumped.

One more question.......when you call Apple Care with a problem, are you talking to a real "expert" or are you talking to someone who is just reading from a script. Just wondering how much faith you can put in the information they are supplying.

    Thanks again,

You can reinstall MacOS X Mountain Lion from the Recovery HD:

    • Restart your computer while pressing down both the command and R keys at the same time.
    • Unce you see the apple logo, release the keys
    • Then select "Reinstall OS X" from the Utilities Window.
