Q: Messages fails to send first time, resending the message works….  This happens every time I send a message...

First time, it shows an error with an exclamation point.

2nd time, it sends just fine.

    Hi,

I think that there might be  a number of things going on here.

    1) Apple having issues with some @mac.com names both for AIM logins and as Apple IDs for iMessages

    2) larger number of people sending iMessages possibly linked to the Olympics and hold overs whilst people try to resolve not getting some messages and pics.

    3) Issues with the iMessages servers as things get ramped up for the iOS 6 release.

We could also be looking at backend issues where certain DNS servers cannot find or resolve certain servers

    Hi,

Have you set up FaceTime ?

This uses the same IMAgent support app but links in to different servers at the Apple End.

But I have seen one post that involved contact with Apple Support which did it this way round.

The presumption being that you will use the same Apple ID is Messages and FaceTime.

I haven't set up FaceTime yet.

I did just check the Sharing and Permissions settings for Messages.  There were several entries; Everyone with Custom Access, System with Read & Write priveleges, Wheel and a second Everyone each with Read Only permissions.

I added myself, made myself the owner and set Read and Write priveleges.  The couple I have sent now since have delivered without any problem.

I will look at setting up FaceTime.

I greatly appreciate your time and suggestions.

    Hi,

Glad to hear you are making Progress.

I have checked my Ownership and Permissions and find mine is the same as yours.

The System should generally own Applications.

Users (everyone) should have at least Read Access.

The fact the Everyone option is listed twice is strange.

Yes, it does seem odd.  I wonder if the second entry for Everyone is causing some conflict?  I repaired the permissions and they are now as they were.

VXO, highlight the Messages app and press Command-I to bring up the Info dialog box.  Permissions are at the bottom of the box.

    Hi,

It is strange as I have the same settings and I don't appear to have the same issues as everyone who is reporting this sort of thing (the numbers are still low.)

I have seen the red Exclamation Mark before but in checking it has been revealed the iPhone I was sending to was not on a Wifi Network and temporarily had no "phone Signal".

I am not sure what else to suggest at the moment.

As iMessages uses a different format to send the messages than the IMs for Jabber and AIM I don't think an add-on for iChat is causing this  (there have been issues in the past with some add-ons not being suitable for the next Upgraded version)

By the time we get to Snow Leopard and iChat 5 there are very few if any Add-ons left.

In the past things like mAudio Firewire devices have caused issues with A/V chats but they can be excluded here as it is a new Message format.

We then have to consider if the Messages option is enabled on the iPhone.

I think it may turn out to be hard to track down.

Yes, this behaviour may change with IOS 6.  It's not a huge thing for me, a minor inconvenience.  I greatly apprecviate your assistance.  Enjoy your weekend.

VXO, I don't know if you've resolved this issue yet.  I have just followed a suggestion from user RobShrugged in another similar thread that, so far, has worked for me.

I opened Messages/Preferences/Accounts and unchecked the box labeled Enable This Account and closed Messages.  I reopened Messages and then re-enabled the check box.  You may be asked to enter your password although I wasn't.  So far, no more red exclamation marks.

I hope this also works for you and that it is a permanent fix.

    Regards,

    peter

I'm bringing this back to life.  I have the exact same issue again.  I'm on OS X 10.8.3 running Messages Version 7.0.1 (3318)

What I've noticed is that it's always the first iMessage I send someone after I've been away from the Mac for a while.  So much so that I now just wait for it to fail and send it again and it always sends the 2nd time.  It only fails when sending an iMessage, not to aim or gchat.  After that, it never fails again for the duration of the conversation.  I don't know how long I have to wait for it to fail again, but it happens daily.

This started once I got IOS 6 on my phone and iPad and started using my iphone phone number with the "Start new conversations from:" option checked in Messages.

Anyone else still experiencing this?  Additional ideas for a solution?

i'm with "biver" in bringing this back to ilfe because i have the exact same issues. been this way for a LONG time; can't remember how long, but at least all of this year.

like biver, only with the first msg i send; i have to wait a while for the red exclamation icon to show with the message asking me to try again - i do, and it goes thru. it's very strange & frustrating.
