Q: New to OS X:  What to expect in System logs?

I am an OS X newbie having only started using a Mac earlier this year, so I really don't know what is "normal" and what is not... and I don't really have anyone I can ask, so please forgive the numpty question...

But is it normal to have 1000's of entries in my System log?

Every reboot produces dozens upon dozens with all sorts of errors and warmings and commentary of other sorts.  It's impossible for me to know whether it's working as it should because there is so much noise in there.

I know this is "how long is a piece of string" question, but I just read somewhere that you should not be seeing too many log entries and I am seeing hundreds and hundreds of them - maybe 100 or so after a reboot.  Is this to be expected?
