I rented some movies and moved them to my ipad, but they disappeared and I can't re-download them for free because they are rentals. Any suggestions to what I could do to get them back ?

    Try rebooting the iPad.

Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.

This might work, but it will start the 24 hour timer as well - if you actually start the movie. If you do find the movies in the search - tap on one of them when you are ready to start watching it.
Swipe to the right from your first home screen to get to the iPad Spotlight search. Type in the name of any of your movies in the field at the top. When the movie appears in the search - tap on it and it should start to play.

    A stupid question:

Did you check the Videos app under Rental?

Just on the odd chance that they did not actually move to the iPad - did you check in iTunes again on the Mac for the rentals?

at this point... maybe you need to get in touch with iTunes Support @ https://expresslane.apple.com

since the rented movies are not on either your devices...it's either you request for a refund or  have them grant renting the movie again for free.
