Q: IOS 5.1.1. update bug (Volume Control)

This thread concerns IOS 5.1.1. update and the subsequent loss of volume button functionality and use of internal speakers.

Please can someone help from the mac team!

It's not a jailbreak phone. only purchased in early April on O2. Updated to 5.1.1. yesterday morning and now the volume buttons are virtually redundant!. Here are the symptoms;

  1. When the volume buttons are pressed on the home screen i get "ringer" and the speaker symbol appear but nothing more (ie. +/- volume)
  2. When playing back from iTunes with no headphones in, I get nothing through the internal speakers, nor do the volume buttons work, nor is the volume slider visable.
  3. When i playback Youtube content with no headphones in, I get nothing through the internal speakers, nor do the volume buttons work, nor is the volume slider visable.
  4. With headphones plugged in sound is audible and volume buttons work.
  5. Whilst using voicemail, (no headphones connected) i can play the message through the speakers and control volume using side buttons.

What's the deal Mac Support? I have restored the phone twice and also given the headphone jack a good blow with Servisol Duster 101.

Thanks, P

Same thing happened to me and I checked all settings, restored phone, reset all settings under GeneraI blew in the headphone connection and blew in the bottom iphone connection and no luck. I read through this forum and followed advice on gettng a tootbrush and cleaning the plug in at the bottom of my iphone, so i got me an old toothbrush and basically just cleaning the bottom iphone connection. When you look inside there is what looks like a small chip or board inside, i stuck the brissels of the toothbrush in there and started to clean it and blow out the dust, then toothbrushed it again a couple of more times then blew it out again and WALLA, i pushed the volume button and i got sound. Volume buttons are now working, music is back up and texts and ringer are back on. THANKS FOR THE TIPS. I never write on forums but this drove me crazy and the toothbrush tip helped so i thought Id post my fix and hopefully this time i can help someone.

I'd been having the same volume problems with my iPhone 4s for a couple of weeks now, and finally went online to see if I could find a solution before going to the apple store.  I have to admit, I was VERY skeptical of the suggestion that it was just a dust issue, but since it was an easy fix to try, I got out a toothbrush and a toothpick and went to town on the main port on the bottom of the phone. I'm stunned, but IT WORKED!!!  Volume is now functioning perfectly!  So whoever first made that suggestion...THANK YOU!  And for those of you who are as skeptical as I was (and truly, I thought there was NO chance this would work), you might want to give it a try.  I'm SO happy it turned out to be such a quick, easy and FREE solution!  :-)

Ok everyone happy the cleaning worked for some of you, but I tried everything and nothing has worked. And yes the problem only started when I updated!!! Kicking myself looking at that update for nearly a month before I downloaded it:/ calling apple doesn't help as they want you to upgrade and BUY more apple support before they will even talk to you and the genius bar will tell you that you need a new phone and blame it on something other than the 5.1.1 update!! Pure BS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ready to chuck it and buy some of these other phones that can now do all the same things. I was fooled into thinking apple was the best, it's more BS than best

Jerseyjes,  Like you I was skeptical.  I did try the toothbrush thing, but I may have been just a little uneasy putting something in the charging port and scrubbing real hard, as it did not work for me.  I figured using the air compressor was a little easier on the connections.  I did turn the regulator up to around 80psi and hit it will everything I could.  I wished I would have tried the volume control inbetween the charging port and the mic jack but I didn't so I could not tell which one actually was the culprit, but it has been a week now and the problem has not returned.

Listen everyone!!!! There are two problems here! One might be resolved if you clean the port but i found a way to know for sure if your Problem is softwar bug or not. Play music on music app or ipod app 2. Make a phone call and put the speakerphone on! 3. Swith back to your music app while still on call and press play. You will hear misic playing while you are on the call and both will output through at the same time. You will notice that although you did not plug headphones in, you still get playback and volume bar appears in music app. But as soon as you hang up from call there is no longer any audio from speaker and volume no longer works. That indicates that your phone has software glitch from updating! You may also notice that camera app does not work( it opens and does not show camera image and shutter remains closed. Just a few things to note when diagnosing. I hope os6 solves this ( sent from sick iphone)

Tried the toothbrush tip. It worked for me! It looks like grandma's recipe always work lol.

Thank u all for your posts.

Surprising that Apple isn't giving any clear statement on that.

My problem occured after using the 4S on a dock. When playing music the 'iPhone' selection on airplay is not showing. The options left to choose from are 'Apple TV' and 'Dock Connector'. I have an iPhone 4 and the 'iPhone' button is there for selection. Both iPhones are running version 5.1.1. I think apple forgot to put the 'iPhone' selection button back in Airplay.

My problem appears to be related to dust or grime in the port. I cleaned the port with alcohol swabs, which seemed to help, but there was still some grime in there. What I did to resolve this this time was to plug it into a charger and then angle the plug down and pull it out, plug it back in, angle it up and pull it out, several times, basically using the charger cable to scrape any remaining grime off the connectors. This worked, although it was a bit risky.
