Ever since I upgraded to Lion on my iMac, certain websites won't load. I hoped when I switched to Mountain Lion earlier this week the problem would go away, but it actually seems to have gotten worse.

The sites that don't load include Boston.com, the Mint.com sign-in page (front page of Mint works fine), some Tumblr sites but not others, and a few others I don't remember. I've tried Safari, Chrome, and Firefox, and have the same problem in all of them. The site tries to load for a longer than usual time, then I get an error message saying the server isn't responding quickly enough. But these sites work fine on all the other devices I've tried them on—iPhone, iPad, MacBook running Snow Leopard—so I know it's not that they're down. Also, Google's cached version of the same sites will load on my iMac.

Some things I've tried:

  • Updating browsers
  • Updating Flash and Java (and enabling applet plug-in)
  • Turning off Ad Block
  • Using OpenDNS servers
  • Turning off virus scan (Sophos)

iMac (21.5-inch Mid 2010), OS X Mountain Lion

Please read this whole message before doing anything.

This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.

    Step 1

The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.

Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up a guest account” (without the quotes) in the search box. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”

While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.

Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem(s)?

After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.

*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.

    Step 2

The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.

Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:

    1. Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    2. Press the power button.
    3. Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
    4. Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).

Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.

The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.

*Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, you can’t boot in safe mode.

Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?

After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

I did exactly as you said and got some interesting results. Logging in as a guest made no difference at all, so I disconnected everything and rebooted in Safe Mode. That time, all the sites I normally have trouble with worked fine.

So I rebooted in the regular mode and, before plugging any peripheries back in, found that the sites still loaded normally. After connecting cords one at a time to see which was causing the problem, I discovered that the when the ethernet cord is plugged in, the problem comes back, even though network settings are set to prefer wifi over ethernet (long story).

For now, I'm just going to leave the ethernet cord unplugged, but if you have any idea why having that connected would make only certain sites fail to load, I would love to hear it.

Thanks so much for getting me this far!

You can't reliably connect to the same network on two different interfaces. The results are unpredictable, but never good.

Plug your ethernet back in. Run System Preferences > Network > Ethernet > Advanced > TCP/IP and change Configure IPv6 to be "link local only". See if that fixes the problem. Many web sites are starting to try IPv6 and many ISPs aren't up to the task. The speculation is that it could cause problems.

Sorry, etresoft, I tried that but it didn't do anything to solve the problem.

    emoniker Level 1 Level 1 (0 points)

That's just it, Linc Davis, I've never been able to connect to the network by ethernet despite a bunch of troubleshooting attempts. Basically, the last time I tried to fix it, I decided to take a break and set the network settings to prefer wifi so I could use the internet again for a while. Then I just kind of never got back to it (since the wifi works fine) and forgot I had it plugged in.

I'm having a very similar problem, but when I sign in under a guest user the websites work just fine. Do you have any recommendations for this situation. I have tried google DNS, flash updates, etc. Thank you.

    1) Plug in your computer to ethernet.

    2) Reset your modem. This CAN be the problem.

    If not,

Go to System Pref --> Network --> Advanced --> DNS --> Add 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 to your list.

    Apply the settings.

    Quit Safari and Restart.

    Hope this helps!

Thank you for the reply. I have tried all of that to no avail. I'm having the problem both at home and on the wireless at work so I'm thinking it is my MacBook and not the connection at home. I should say iPads and other computers are not having problems connecting to these same websites.

    Hi Linc,

So step to gave me some insight into the problem. The sites loaded fine in safe mode but how do I determine which third party modification is causing the issue?
