Q: Messages and issues with Google Talk

Is anyone having issues connection to Google Talk in Messages?  I know talk.google.com was down yesterday, but I am still have issues connecting.  I have tried with both a gmail user account and a gapps account (both which work fine in the Google Talk Windows client).

Ther server settings appear to be correct (server talk.google.com; Port 5223 and Use SSL checked).  Anyone else have issues or know what I might be doing wrong?

    Hi,

If I go to Server Settings, after logging the account out of the server, (So I can change things) and use NO SSL and port 5222 and then log back in again I get this.

    Screen Shot 2012-07-31 at 19.48.38

It's an Alert from the Keychain

    If I "Continue " I get this...

Which is an Alert from Messages itself.

However at this point the Google Talk Account will login.

This is different from the last time I checked in iChat 5

success ! but before you change to 443 SSL on delate all preferences for ichat and messages at users/XXXX/library/Preferences... all plist  (maybe one would work but I did delete all so not sure which one ;-) So this is what worked for me:

    1. Using activity monitor

    quit the meesages service

    2. Delete all plist

    com.apple.iChat.AIM.plist

    com.apple.iChat.Jabber

    com.apple.iChat.LSSharedFileList

    com.apple.iChat

    com.apple.iChat.StatusMessages

    com.apple.iChat.Yahoo

    com.apple.imessage.bag

    com.apple.imservice.FaceTime

    com.apple.imservice.iMessage

    3. Restart Computer

4 set up your account again with messages and put 443 ssl (on)

    good luck :-)

My office had blocked port 5223, so setting Google Talk to the following worked:

I too had the the same problem, but i solved it by the followin method.

    Step 1 : Enable 2 setp verification from gmail.com (https://www.google.com/settings/security)

Step 2 : Go to Manage in Connected applications and sites tab

Step 3 : Generate application specific password.

Step 4 : Now go to system preferences > Mail, Contacts & Calenders > Google tab (If already) > details> enter your username and then the application specific password

Step 5 : In iChat preferences , you'll now see the google acc with greyed out username and password and a single option of Enable this account.

Step 6 : Now it should work

Yes, but if you set the port to 443 you can check SSL back on and it works and is perhaps more secure?

    Hi,

Yes port 443 and SSL is more secure than not using SSL.

Google accepts SSL Logins on port 5223 (The regular Jabber SSL Port) and on port 443

It does not accept NON SSL logins.

The issue is that now Google do not thinks that SSL is secure enough and you have to enable the Less Secure Apps Login option at your Google Settings.

    Hi all,

The likely reason for this happening is in your Google account security settings. It appears you need to allow insecure apps access for iMessages to work (whatever insecure means from Google's perspective ???).

Go to the link below and login using your google id when prompted.

    https://www.google.com/settings/security/lesssecureapps

Not sure why this is necessary when the iMessages server settings are as below but there you go.

    Untitled 2.png

Like you probably did I went through my Google account settings and turned on the option to stop insecure access. Seemed like a good idea at the time. After that suddenly iMessage starts popping up login prompts and I can't connect it any more.

    It helped me now

    I am using Yosmite

    Hi,

Already mentioned in this 4 year old thread

Re: Messages and issues with Google Talk

(although it was just over a year ago after those changes had come in).
