It is somewhere between difficult and impossible with the native contacts app.  Suggest you take a look at an app called group email in the store.  Works pretty good for creating and managing groups.

I had believed that it's somewhere between impossible and snowball in hades.  I found that I can create groups in my Mac and the iPad displays the groups but that's a tease.  The groups are completely useless on the iPad.  They can not be used for group messages.  In fact, you can't do anything except look at them!

It is time consuming but can be done without an app.

Go into your contacts and give your group a name (example: Group - Family)

In the email field add your email addresses as follows (your email field will be one long string):

    Mom(space)<mom@gmail.com>,(space)Dad<dad@gmail.com>,(space)BrothersName<brother@gmail.com>,(space)and so on

Note: spaces and commas - IMPORTANT!

Thanks Merrymaryj, I was looking for this solution myself! I was very surprised Apple doesn't make it easy to do this in their native apps. I honestly don't understand the way Apple operates at times. They make these really wonderful tools, programs, etc., then leave out what I consider essential components. (I was also trying to organize my videos on my iPad)

I could be wrong, but I believe that the first space in your example (after Mom) is a mistake. I left that one out and it worked for me.

Since you cannot create/name a group, perhaps you would explain exactly how to select a group and name it anything?

Or are you suggesting to create a new contact then simply add all the email addresses to this single contact?

You would create a new contact and add the emails address.  For instance i have my contacts called:

    GROUP-Family

    GROUP-Office

    Hope this helps!

I just tried this method and it works. I'm also looking into creating groups using iCloud, but haven't really read into it yet.

    1) go to your Contacts App. Select "All Contacts", or whatever area you want to include your new group.

    2) touch the + sign at the bottom which will add in a new contact. Yes, you're right, this is NOT a group contact, but an individual one.

    3) In the "First" name field, add in the name of the group. You can ignore Last name and/or company if you want, or add in more info.

    4) add your string of email names in the "email" field. I believe the default just says Home.

    voila.

I recommend that you first make the string of names in another text app, such as notes first as I accidentally touched the little 'x' mark on the far right side which deleted my progress...argh. Or, if you have a lot of addressses to add, you might want to do it on your computer first, and then just email the list to yourself. I'm sure there are easier ways, but this is a quick and easy way, especially if your email group isn't large.

Ignore the envelope...when I copied and pasted from my list it inserted the envelope icon (just to confuse matters)!

Mom<mom@gmail.com>,(space)Dad<dad@gmail.com> so on and so on
