In the authenticaion window, it should not reject any admin user and password. When the authentication window opens while logged in as another user, that user's name probably appears in the Name field. When you replace it with your admin name, make sure you are typing in the user name precisely, including case, as shown in System Preferences Accounts pane. You should also be able to use the "short" name, which is the name used for the admin user's home folder.
Yes.. well it is!! It will accept my partners name and password... but although I can edit everything using the same user name and password... it is identical to the System preference accounts pane!!! I haev been pointed in the direction of keychain access and been told that the original keychain access will be the password???
Does this problem happen in more than one user account that are not admin?
When you are logged in as a non-admin user, does your admin user name and password work in other places where the authentication window appears. For example, in System Preferences Accounts pane, when you click on the Lock, it should ask for authentication. Does it work there?

I don't know if that makes sense, since you are manually entering the name and password, not letting Keychain enter it automatically. But there is a "Keychain" utility in your Application/Utilities folder that can be used to inspect and reset the Keychain, if you want to try doing something with the Keychain.
By the way, what version of Mac OS X is this...?
Just tried that and no it doesn't but again it will let me do it with my partners account which I set up as an admin user a couple of days ago...
I will have a look at the keychain utility and try and reset it- the advice I was given was that I have changed my password and so is different from the keychain one and so will not work... ???? Didn't make sense to me as I am able to alter things with the very same password when I am logged in???

That doesn't make sense to me either. But you can try it...

I didn't catch that point before. If you can do the things that don't work using your admin user name and password that you CAN do using a different admin user name and password, maybe you can try changing your admin user's password (if you have not already since this problem occurred).
