Time machine continues to fail during backup. I reformatted the drive to no avail. When I click the red "i" to get info on the failure it says "the backup volume could not be found." The backup starts fine and runs through about 40gb of files and then I get the error.

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.

Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.

Copy the words "Starting standard backup" (without the quotes) on this page and paste into the String Matching text field. Note the timestamp of the last message shown. Clear the text field and scroll back in the log to that time. Post the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear.

Post the log text, please, not a screenshot. If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don't post many repetitions of the same message.

Some personal information, such as the names of your files, may be included — edit that out, too, but don’t remove the context.

I only get these 09 dates when I select All Messages?

Your system clock is way off. At least, I hope so. If not, you have other problems. That backup was successful.

Backup wasn't successful, I get the same error from Time machine whether I initiate the backup or if it runs on the schedule.

The clock in System preferences is correct and when I click system.log in the Console the date/time is also accurate, but the time that appears under "All Messages" under LOG DATABASE QUERIES is off. Will reseting the PRAM address this issue?

Do you have no log messages more recent that 2009? That's quite unusual, if so. What is your OS X version?

10.5.8 - I reformatted the external hard drive again and the back up started, but is now stalled at 37GB of 456GB. No error yet but not moving forward.

I still don't know whether you have more recent log messages.

When I view the Console it appears that the lower left clock is progressing and new messages are posting but the time and date are still way off. Below is a screenshot of the Console window

Select system.log and scroll to the bottom.

Good, so you do have log messages from this decade. Now you can try to carry out the steps suggested in my first message.

When I select "all messages" I only have the 09 messages to view. Anyway to refresh or update this list?

Try system.log instead of All Messages.

no messages appear under system.log when starting standard backup is in the find field. Have to go to work, I'll try more this evening. Thanks for your paitience.
