As an added note, when I look at "Network and sharing" it shows the pc connected to the router (the TC) with an excellent connection, but from the router to the Internet, there is a big "X" indicating no connection ( yet I am able to connect to the Internet via my iPad which I am using to post).
Take a screen shot of the command windows with the ipad and post the pic. Or just type out the gateway and dns values.. the reason you are failing to get internet.. is any of long list.
The reason it is important is to know if the vista computer has failed to get gateway or dns.. or get them correctly.. that is why I want you to reboot the system.
Also that you should ping the TC ip address.. I can tell you what to ping if you give me screenshot but by default the TC is 10.0.1.1 .. unless the TC is bridged.. or you changed the IP address.. please ping that and tell me what happens.. then ping internet address. Also what happens.
Try manually setting gateway and dns.. turn off all firewalls if the address is correct and you still cannot ping.
Windows can and does magically decide it is now in public or work domain instead of home.. it throws up the firewall and blocks all access for no known reason.. you can expect no better from vista.. you should upgrade to xp.. or win7.. either way is an upgrade. Anyway turn off the firewalls.
Windows also updates things like wireless drivers which can mess your pc up totally.
Networking on windows vista especially with wireless is so bad .. open device manager.. delete the driver and reinstall it after a reboot of the computer.
An alternative is the wireless card has actually failed. Even if it connects it won't actually send packets.
I recommend as a hardware test you use an ubuntu live cd and see if that gives you internet on the same hardware as the vista cannot.. if so you can totally know vista has corrupted itself.. not surprising.. wipe the OS and start again.. preferrably with xp or win7.
I pinged 10.0.1.1 and the request timed out, same with Internet addresses.
I took a ok don't know how to post here from my iPad. Apologies in advance for my lack of technical knowledge.
Default gateway: 10.0.1.1
DHCP server: 10.0.1.1
DNS server: 10.0.1.1
Ipv4 address: 10.0.1.3(preferred)
Firewall is off.
It is vista.
I uninstalled the driver and rebooted to no avail.
This is just lovely vista..
Disconnect the TC from the network.. plug LAN port into the Computer by ethernet.
Make sure the connectivity LEDS come on.
Ping the TC again.
If it fails. press and hold in reset for 10-15 sec until the front led starts rapidly flashing.
Allow the TC to start up.. and open the airport utility which I hope you have loaded into vista.
If you cannot find the TC.. and other network devices can, then I suspect your pc is on the blink.. open device manager and ensure the network card is on and working. Make a ubuntu live cd and see if ubuntu can find the TC.. if it does then reinstall windows.. but not vista.. use XP or Win7.
I think you are blaming the TC.. this is far more likely to the computer if everything else is working.
I finally found out what was wrong. I have a Dell and after searching all day apparetnly there was both a Windows update AND a McAfee update that made things go awry.
I performed a system restore on my machine and it connects fine.
I am still updating windows and McAfee again (apparently with McAfee you have to make sure there DAT version is 6809 or above).
LaPastenague - I do appreciate you looking into this for me!
