Q: Songs Disappearing from iTunes

I've seen other threads on this marked as answered, but they clearly were not based on the posts in them. At first I thought I was going crazy, or maybe had lost some music when I transferred from my old machine to my new one, but now I have songs I know I bought since moving to the new machine that have disappeared. Not just randomly missing songs, but entire missing albums too. Of course, since backing up my music consisted of simply copying the iTunes folder to an external drive (admittedly lazy way, sure) it happily overwrite the folder as I told it to and thus my backups are missing the songs too. This is complete crap, and is NOT answered as the other threads claim. Even if support allows me to re-download everything (at this point, I couldn't even tell you for sure what I am missing since I don't recall everything I've bought) what stops this from happening in the future? If my hard earned money is just going to vaporize off my hard drive at random when I am trying to play by the rules and be legal, give me one good reason not to just save that money and just start pirating everything? Because as much as I don't like pirating, I don't like buying an entire CD for one good song even less, and I like having stuff I bought simply disappear even less than that.

What is the fix for this problem? If Apple lets me redownload everything, where is the proof this won't happen again? I NEED to have a legitimate answer to this question or you and the music industry can kiss my money goodbye. Limewire will be my new music source.

    Dear Apple;

I was reading some of the posts above mine, I also had called Apple and received similar answers then the people above.

Can anyone tell me (at Apple) why we all have the same symptoms? We are all sleep walking deleting our songs right?

I have songs disappear I purchased from Apple and besides adding things over many years, I have not deleted a single thing from iTunes.

I have in my current purchased list 517 items. Music, Films, Books.

I thought Apple was a responsive company to their customers. As i was setting up a new playlist I discovered once again more songs lost today - random. Just one here, one there, or a whole album gone I know I put on there, cant find it - locate window pops up, so the text line is on there but the song is gone and no longer on the computer. I haev one particular song where i Purchased the song as well as the Video to the song same time same day. Video is still there, song is now missing.

I am upset at Apple. I own a lot of Apple products, as I said before, until thsi issue is resolved I will nto purchase another. I hope Apple has not turned with its success into just another "give a ****" giant corporations.

All of my music "came back."  Not a thing missing now.

Yes...But why would that cause iTunes to delete music? And why hasn't Apple fixed this problem yet? At this point, I'm tempted to download some alternative iPod - PC software, just so I don't have to use any more of Apple's stuff. Plus, that means I can free up a TON of space by uninstalling all that junk that comes with iTunes.

I'vealso had this problem for years, with a large music library. 200 GBs. Repointing iTunes to a song is irritating; having to restore it is doubly so. And the problem is that iTunes is the heart of an ecosystem. If you have AppleTV or do music streaming or whatever, you are stuck with iTunes. Apple needs to fix this, and a good start would be some sort of maintenance utility. Maybe one that backs up the XML files and then loks for errors each time it runs.

Am trying to figure out what happens and the more I read the more random it gets. The only thing I know is that I had 1224 songs in iTunes and now I have 925. My iPhone and iPad had 7 gigs of music each and now less than 5!

I don't even know which songs are missing ! I can see it from the number quoted in the library.

Here is what worked for me:

open itunes>file>add to library>click your user name>music>itunes>itunes Media>music. then click open.

it will import only the missing songs. In my case the files were actualy still in my library but itunes could not see them for sm reason.

    i hope that helps someone!

You mean why aren't they responding in these user-to-user forums?

Or did you contact them via iTunes support?

    User-to-user forums.

    Apple does not post here.

Also, don't call. iTunes support is email only.

I am having the same problem. Just migrated from a PC to a Mac.

I thought I was missing some files, but when I got back to my PC the files weren't there also.

And it is random. One album is missing track 7, the other track 2. Very weird, I am sure I didn't delete any files.

Another thing: Apple must have changed the way media files are organized, because I noticed a while back that I suddenly had duplicates of pretty much my entire library...I've since deleted most of them, and before anyone even suggests it, I have made a point of not deleting all the copies of any one particular song, so it is most certainly NOT user error that has eradicated a good chunk of my library. God, I'm so sick of Apple's problems.

Strange that the files actually go missing from the disk - I've had this happen for years. I used to think it was only songs with non-English characters in the titles (songs by Klaus Mitfoch and TSA almost always disappear no matter how many times I re-import them), but I've noticed others missing as well. I have so much music - almost 500GB - that I can't narrow down when it's happening. I'm certainly not deleting anything. I check the drives I've kept them on for bad sectors, directory problems, etc., but nothing like that has ever shown up. Thankfully I have always bought physical media. I'm not sure what to do except to try to stop using iTunes at all. I'll give Songbird a try and see what happens.

    Add me to that list.

Its exactly as the guy at the original post said it. At start I thought I somehow missed it when transfering, then I thought I was going crazy, and I was like "well maybe I was just hearing that at grooveshark or youtube" to calm myself down, but now there are songs I KNOW, FOR A F-A-C-T that I had, and poof, gone.

So I google search and, vuala! I am not crazy!
