    What are your symptoms? It's highly unlikely that your Mac has an actual virus...

    Good Lord, if you have MacKeeper installed, uninstall it immediately - it's nothing but annoying malware. If you have a newer version installed, use the uninstaller. If it's an older version, see this.

    And read this.

    Symptoms of malware vary, because all malware is different. Some malware exhibits no symptoms whatsoever.

    The MacKeeper pop-up is most likely just an obnoxious pop-up ad on a web site you visited. If you quit Safari when it appeared, and now it keeps appearing every time you open Safari, that's because in Lion and Mountain Lion, Safari will (by default) try to re-load any sites that were open when it quit. So it's re-loading the site that caused that pop-up to appear. To fix that problem, simply hold down the shift key while starting Safari, to tell it not to load those pages. Then don't visit the site that generated the pop-up again.

    If you have actually installed MacKeeper, see Clinton's post.

    @Thomas,

    Just a BTW - thanks for the info on your page about the new version of Flash Player: oddly enough, even though I have my preference pane set to download new versions of Flash when available, I (or Adobe) missed that one. Just another reason I visit your pages often - you keep them updated. Between you and James Pond, you have two of the best suggestions for Mac users on the 'net.

    As always, thanks,

    Clinton

    My Macbook Pro is flashing briefly on occasion and I am worried about a virus. I have both Virus Barrier Plus and Express installed and they say I am clean but I am still worried. What do you think?

    you dont need antivirus on a MAC,.....and Mackeeper should never be clicked on, and if you installed it REMOVE IT.       Dont buy into www scare tactics about "mac virus/cleaners"

    If you have MacKeeper, unistall immediately. The signs of a virus are, weird popups, mac slowdowns, corrupt files and boot errors.

    It is not a Mac!

    Seriously another vote for getting rid of MacKeeper. It is probably the worst thing that can be installed on a Mac.

    Thanks everyone for your imput. I am confused because the Apple Store support team recommended the Virus Barrier antivirus programs when I called so see if I needed any anti-virus and I bought them at the App Store. I have had them since day one and the flashing has only recently begun but they do constant updates. I have no MacKeeper but I do have Adobe Flash Player.

    Ok, I read the links Clinton posted above and I have uninstalled ONE of the virus barrier programs sucessfully. The other I have uninstalled but apparently it is still running in the background because I can't delete it in my trashcan because it is "open".  That has to be the my problem. It is clear as day now. I have no idea what to do next to clean it off of my computer. It is called VirusBarrier Express. Clinton...help...please?

    Go in to Activity Monitor and quit any processes that are connected to your antivirus program. Then try delete the program.

    Shutting down the computer will close all open files and processes, freeing up any open files in the Trash. However, there may be ones not in the trash that are related to the virus utility that may start up again next time.

    If there is an uninstaller for the virus program, find it and run it to get rid of all related files. An uninstaller, when provided, is the most reliable way to remove related files that are not in an obvious place to delete, particularly files that are loaded at startup.
