Maybe they are looking for feedback from people with positive attitudes who prefer to focus on solving the problem, so that when, in the long run, the problem is solved, even the whiney, sarcastic and threatening types will also benefit from the bug fix.

I would be more than happy to focus on the problem but haven't seen any efforts of the sort, and haven't said anything 'threatening', so please relax. I dont see why opinions are so inexcusable. So yeah 'maybe' you are the coolest of the cool apparently. I'd have a more positive attitude if their approach to the problem actually acknowledge and engaged customers instead hand picking people that are so brazenly apple zealots their just over the moon to get a email from support like it was Steve himself.

Maybe, besides being absolutely cool, I am, for the purposes of your complaint, relatively more cool than you, because I complained sooner, or because my box as a particular config they are interested in.
Given the wide-spread nature of this issue, do you really think there are enough people at apple to be able to call and collect data from every affected customer? As it is, apple engineering is working thru apple care advisors, having them reach-out with the diagnostic software, and collect the resulting data. Do that enough, and you can get a handle on the isse with out responding to every affected customer.
They are working the problem. Where they could do better, is documenting known complaints, and letting the customer base know they are aware and working on it, and give those customers an opportunity to indicate they too are affected by whatever the problem is; notification center, perhaps at the bottom would e a good pace to post links to these briefs and feedback mechanism.

Right now I am using my Windows 7 company machine. It is a very good OS I can change faster than Tim can say Apple.

Guys, I'm really sorry to hear you have those issues. Because of this thread, I was at first cautious to upgrade to ML on my MBP-R, so I waited for 10.8.1 and upgraded yesterday. It seems like it gives me around 7+ hours with 1/3 brightness, wi-fi, browsing, DropBox on, and even little use of VMWare and from time to time doing some compilation (like port update), i.e. my 'normal' work. Now at 48% with 4:02 remaining. No fiddling with SMC, disabling services, clean reinstall or anything like that. I have all upgrades installed (including SMC firmware update for PowerNap). Though I'll see how it'll go for subsequent battery charges.
So hopefully the data collected with that Apple's special app will help them to identify the problem and work out a fix soon. But the problem may be not as widespread as it may seem from reading this thread, but if it's "just" a 0.1%, it still would be thousands of people.

I've updated to 10.8.1... Now after just few minutes I'm down to 96%... The only reason I'm using iPhone or Macbook is because I didn't have to worry or think about it... Now the battery drains quicker than in my old notebook. Apple!! Get it fixed! And since updating to Mountain Lion I started getting this exclamation mark notice as well.

OK just made a time machine backup, wiped disk and did a clean install of ML then used migration assistant to get all my files and settings back then ran the 10.8.1 updateso we shall see how that goes with battery although notlooking good been of power long enough to walk into another room and post this and already lost 4%.
Major drama this is I'm going to ask for my money back on MLwhat a crock.

So, last night I switched off my MBPR with battery at 42% with a stated time of 1 hour 34 minutes left. (This is a brand new RMBP with just Mountain Lion installed, no upgrade from Lion). I had closed all running programs but the battery life declared the above time. This morning it is now saying 3 hours 16 minutes left with the battery at 40%.
However, as soon as I open a new page in Safari about 40 minutes gets knocked off the estimated battery life which then gradually climbs back up to close to what it was before over the course of the next 3 - 4 minutes. I know that it is perfectly normal for the status to change slightly due to suddenly employing the wifi etc for opening the new tab bla bla bla but this seems far more extreme than anything I have seen before. However the decline of the percentage itself seems to be steady rather than volatile so it still suggest to me that this stinks of a software gltich rather than hardware despite what Beisarius said which was very interesting.
My plan was this morning was to turn the machine on, if it still said 1 hour 34 minutes left at a 42 % charge I was heading straight back to the Apple store to hand it back. Now.........more tests to follow. Can't put in to words how much I like the screen and design but it will go straight back if basic functions are screwed up.

-The new BTO MBA lasts as designed. SO maybe thousands or hundreds of thousands are that statistical lemonish. I have seen update processes affect badly gpus, HDDs, so on. Firmware as well. And yes, also have had Samsung call back- so Apple is not the only company that takes some care.
- hope that all people with newer machines are opening a case and their problem is fixed. Keeping machines plugged is a sure way to lack the evidence that the battery is affected.
- It is the norm, that x% of any product will have some issues under certain circumstances. It may well be that even 50 000 machines affected (50 000 000 to repair) is well too low a count to do anything except treat case by case. If I was a manager, that is what I would do. Placing myself in Apple's shoes:
- Mountain Lion is amazing- for those 96% of unaffected machines
- Some machines will have issues. My new MBA came with a loose trackpad. geniuses fixed it in 5 minutes, and the workorder proves it. Am just glad its so tiny an issue.
- Some people's batteries will start having problems after 1 yr due to poor cycling and constant plugging- and a new OS will reveal that just as they decide to test battery life.
- Some may have defective batteries- or batteries that had been stored the wrong way. Again, tiny percentile.
- Some may have a faulty logic board that can handle Lion but not ML.
Still, vast majority of users are experiencing accurate life. We know because of the whole north american market, a huge one, barely a few posted here in 90 posts... There is no rush at Futureshop, BestBuy or Apple Stores to return macbooks... So lots of mobile professionals are having no issue. Even 100 000 machines (2010 2011 2012) that seem affected is a small percentile for Apple. Too small for a major recall.
Same would happen with Dell. Acer. Toshiba. Samsung. Lenovo and so on..
My first macbook (white type) had dead pixels- returned. Second- trapped a cd drive. So stuff happens. But its still a company with fewer issues that others.

some updates after spending 8 hrs trying to solve this thing. I followed all tricks discussed in this thread (yes I spend hours reading all 90 pages!) I did the following
1. rm ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist, killall Dock
2. Verify Disk/Permissions (actually there were many warnings)
3. reset SMC and PRAM
4. disabled Dropbox and Notification center
5. killed a couple of tasks (e.g bash, flash)
The only thing that I was able to fix is the overheating and the constant work of the fan ( it dissaperared after quitting dropbox and repairing permissions - I think it's the latter).
I did a full drain of the battery and full charge and I had 8.30+ when I opened my macbook this morning.
Wifi was off, and after I turned it on, the estimation dropped to 4:42 !!!
After 3,5 hrs of web surfing (only) I still got approx 1.5 hrs.
This is 2 hrs less what i got with 10.7 - so I guess nothing I did imroved my situation (expect there is no much warming+fans noise anymore)

I believe the response of the OS has to do with hardware. Are there any MBA late2010 that solved this problem somehow, or a clean install helped them?
