Try putting your date sometime in the future. Access the App store and you will get a security error. Then reset the date to today and try again. That worked for me when nothing else would.

FYI - I had to set my date well into the future; a few days or a month wouldn't do.  I went a year ahead and the app store generated the security error. I set it back and behold, it worked!

I just tried this but it didn't seem to work, I put it a few years ahead and accessed the iTunes store, I didn't get a security error but the same "cannot connect to iTunes store" and when I put it back to the current date, nothing happened. Did I do something wrong?

Sorry to hear that.

Unfortunately I'd say either try to push it further into the future or check out other threads for troubleshooting.

One other thing I did that might have made a difference: I closed the App Store app before I set the time ahead.  Double tap your home key and then tap and hold on the App Store icon.  Once the delete symbol comes up click it to fully close that app.  Set the time ahead, get into the App Store, hopefully you'll get the security error message, then you can change back to the correct time and it should work.

The date solution worked for me. Seems like a completely weird back-door solution but it worked.

Thanks for the hints folks.  This was so frustrating.

Since I wasn't quite sure how to change the date, instead I simply turned on "Time Zone Support" and am now able to sign into iTunes.  I recall turning this feature off some time ago in order to conserve on power usage.  I'll turn it back off after I finish updating.
