Which wireless router are you using ? Have you chekced if the firmware version on the wireless router is upto date ?

I was having all the same problems and spent hours researching the issue on the net. Then I upgraded the firmware to my router and the problem has completely resolved. I have had no issues with the wi-fi dropping since I upgraded the firmware 24 hours ago.

There are absolutely NO issues with Mountain Lion...
Everyone just needs to convince their networking teams to upgrade their router firmware!
Even though every other opperating system includint Lion, IOS, Windows and even Ubuntu work just fine with the router the way it is, and ONLY Mountain Lion fails to be backwards compatible... It's our Routers Fault!
We should all be happy that Mountain Lion is letting us know that our routers firmware is out of date, by dropping connection periodically.

Yeah people, we should be grateful for the bugs! Even though this DOESN'T happen with ANY other version of OS X, or even Windows... Apple is putting bugs into the system intentionally so we upgrade our router firmware! It's all good intentions don't you see?

Apple knows it's something on there end. They are not trying to force us to upgrade our hardware. My router has the latest update. Even people with New Apple routers have had the issue. Or maybe this might help you, I'm running 2 side by side Macbooks and only one acts up.
If Apple was just trying to make people upgrade like Windows always does Apple wouldn't be working so hard to fix the issue, they would just ignore it like MS. They called me over a half dozen times with test to run and info from me and others. They are doing this just from reading our post. They know some programs are affected while most aren't. Of those that are acting up some are so bad they freeze the system.
I thought I read you had 30 days to return it. So do it if you can't stand it. return it or If you can't return it reinstall Lion or Snow leopard until there is a fix. Lion did the same thing to me but after a while it stopped completely and that took about 3 months. Trying to diagnose Thousands lines of code against every variable can take months. Apple sent 3rd party developers beta versions to make what ever updates they might need if any at all. A lot of these developers haven't updated their software yet. Canon for one posted their updates for ML won't be available until late October.
Believe me Apple knows we are all ****** and they can't hide the issue because it's been in the different tech magazines.
I would guess that the posters that are bashing Apple won't get a call for info on their Macs.
Don't start bashing me for saying this, but post something useful so Apple and other posters can compare notes.

I took my iMac to the Apple store yesterday after a 3rd call with Apple on the phone. The tech did discover that I had a motherboard issue (I think Apple calls is logic board) that needs to be replaced. Because I made the idiotic move of buying my system from Best Buy I had to leave it at the Apple store. He said I should get it back in 7 days or so when the new board comes in. (Note to self... don't purchase from Best Buy to save $50 in the future...) He witnessed the wifi dropping issue and thinks it could be related to the logic board but wasn't positive. I had a panic restart a couple days ago which is what tipped him off to the motherboard issue itself. So, we'll see. I told him that I couldn't understand why they would release a product which according to hundreds of message boards is not an isolated problem and he agreed. I'm not trying to bash Apple - I'm just a normal guy who spent $1200 on a product I assumed would work well out of the box like my other purchases from them and I'm disappointed. As far as the router firmware, mine is up to date - I confirmed that during my second call with Apple and via an email with the router manufacturer as well. I'll keep my fingers crossed that when I get the Mac back it has been resolved. Meanwhile, I'll sit here an type away on my Leopard machine which has never had an issue of any kind! Thanks for everyone's feedback on here - I appreciate it. I"m not as techie as most here so your comments are helpful.

nothing work for me,, so i disabled the iMac wifi and bought a new USB wifi dongle.. and now everything works perfect. thank you apple

I used to be a semi geek when I owned Windows but when I switched to Apple, I lost all geekiness. Because it just worked. For four years I never had to restart or shut down unless I wanted to. Four years! What a run for the money! Since my first iMac, I have bought 3 iPods, 1 iTouch, 2 iPhones, 3 iPads and a Macbook Pro. You can see where I am going, eh? Bought a new 27 iMac in March and thought I was in computer heaven. I didn't have to buy it. My first iMac still works flawlessly but I was a bit tired of waiting for it to break so I could get a new machine.
(Bring up volume of ominou sounding music). Then I upgraded to Mountain Lion. Suddenly, I can't get to the Internet (it tells me I am not connected but Network Preferences tells me I am). Endless reboots. Endless resetting of modem. (Fade music.)
I do have a very old (ancient, decrepit) router which has continued to work tirelessly and without complaint until Mountain Lion. I am willing to upgrade, will even consider Airport Extreme or Express but it sounds like that is not going to help from the majority of the posts here. What I am reading (when my machine lets me) is that it is hit and miss for people: some fixes work, some don't and nothing seems to work for everybody.
I am too tech ignorant to understand why all previous operating systems I had (I forget the first but know I have had something then Snow Leopard and Lion) dutifully worked with my network without so much as a sneer or curled lip.
I would dearly love to stay ignorant. After years of being forced to tweak every single Windows machine, it has been a blessed relief to leave my Mac alone. Let me actually play instead of fix my machine. What a concept.
Sigh. Just wondering if anyone here thinks I should change my router (I doubt it can have any firmware or software updated, too old. I lost my password years ago and can't even manage the darn thing and the joy, o the joy, of never actually having to!) I am thinking I should just hang tough to see if this is a bug that is fixed and then change my router if need be? Any suggestion gratefully accepted. Sorry to whine on so, but dang, I used to love my Mac. And now I dread going on the Internet. Sigh.

OSX update 10.8.1 has been released.
Any chance of a wifi issue fix in there? Can't see it in the list of fixes.
Anyone installed it yet and noticed a change/fix?
I'll install it at some point, but currently using my Windows 7 Laptop, as I need a decent wifi signal, as nearly everything is online these days. Come on Apple!!!

Sorry to say you are wrong seanreynolds.
After upgrading to Mountain Lion the day it came out my new iMac could NOT keep a connection. It would literally go out several times an hour.
Apple replaced my iMac. The problem still persisted.
Calls to Apple have been useless. No one would ever admit it was a problem despite multiple postings on here.
Although it's not stated as a 'fix' 10.8.1 has finally fixed my problem. I upgraded yesterday morning and have been online all day and some of the night without a single lost connection.
I did NOT upgrade my router firmware as it was current. I also have the auto update feature turned off on my router.

Ok, so I updated to OSX 10.8.1 earlier on...
First signs were good, as after install and restart I then worked using wifi for about 25 minutes without problems.
Then, left iMac to work on Laptop.
So the real test is then when you wake your iMac up again to see if wifi connection working - just tried this and it did work initially (at this point, I'm thinking they fixed it!) but then wifi connection dropped out when I went into Safari and started a new tab and tried to see bbc site.
So wifi still erratic and we're awaiting a fix. Come on Apple!

Yeah - same here... had a minute where it seemed everything was working, then it dropped the wifi entirely. Actually had a harder time getting back online than usual... MORE difficult, not less. Finally got back online and have been using the "ping" trick to maintain connection.
This is total BS at this point... Apple should offer AT LEAST a discount or rebate on Airport routers if they're the only thing that'll stabilize the computers. This is clearly a problem with APPLE equipment, and they're clearly not owning up to it... why don't they publicly acknowledge what THOUSANDS of us are experiencing?
I'm especially ****** b/c I'm running a brand new Pro w/ Retina display, and having this problem... while a 6 year old iMac operating on Leopard is working just fine...

Obviously Apple is working on a fix because they are sending out updates trying to fix the problem. It may have not fixed yours but it might have helped others.
There are people with new Apple routers having the same issue. Don't rush out and spend money on something that might not work and it ends up being one line of code that needs to be changed. I know it's a pain in A$$ but lets see what Apple comes out with.
My problem started with Lion. It finally started working ok on it's own. My ML started dropping it immediately. Now it's once every 2-3 days. If Apple was trying to force all of us into buying an Apple router they wouldn't have engineers spending 4 hours on the phone with a lot of us. It would affect all Macs. Over 3 million copies of ML have been sold and some of those have been used to update 2 or more Macs. So lets be conservative and say 4 million copies are being used. Of those there are probable less than 1 hundred thousand Macs are affected. I know that is still way to many.
As far as this new ML update, that update is only a Beta release and that means they are still looking and trying different things. So implying that we need to get an Apple router is just adding fuel to the fire that has not been recommended by Apple. This is in the press if you search for it. Compaired to MS where after you buy their expensive new versions a week or so later they come out with a revised list of all things that are not compatible and no fix ever coming out, to bad your out of luck, Apple is working on it.
I was a Master Diagnostician in 4 automotive lines and after months of denials they will start working to fix programming issues. It can take up to a year before that update comes out. So save your money for now and give them a chance. They are working on it now and sending out betas to try. It's not going to take a year and they started working on it with in the first couple days ML was released.
