Q: Shutting down when lid is closed

Has anyone had any issues with their MBP Retina systems shutting down when the lid is closed?

ie:  I left work, unplugged the computer, closed the lid and placed it in my bag.  System seems to power down immediately but with no external lights I have to just assume if I don't hear fans its down.  I place it in my bag and drive home.  Upon arriving home I open the computer and hit spacebar but nothing happens.  After a few minutes I press the power button and it powers on but reboots from a cold boot.

Another strange thing is I have my system set to power up back to open windows and such but the entire system was as if I hadn't had anything open.  It literally crashed I guess while the lid was closed and lost everything I had open.

Just wondering if anyone else has experenced this as its happened about 3 times already within the 2 weeks I've had it.

Thanks,

G

This keeps happening.  Is there a setting that might make this happen?  It wasn't doing this the first week I got it but now seems like everytime I close the lid I'm going to have to restart from scratch and nothing is getting saved.

    Thanks,

So far I've tested the following:

    1) I've reset the MBPr SMC and PRAM and neither had any effect.

    2) I've run disk utility to verify the hard drive and repaired permissions and everything appears ok with no errors.

    3) I'm running full disk encryption using Filevault 2 and running Mountain Lion

    4) If I shut the system down, 50% of the time it will shut down, then after 3-5 seconds it will power itself back on.

    5) If I use the Apple menu and tell it to sleep, it will turn off the monitor like its going to sleep, then after 3-5 seconds it crashes and powers itself back on doing a hard reboot.  Looses all my open apps and basically acts like I pushed and held the power button to force a reboot.

    6) If I close the lid which should put it to sleep, it does what is described in 5.  This is the major issue because it ends up powering itself back on even after I've closed the lid and heats up while in my bag.

All of this worked when I first got the computer 2 weeks ago.  About a week ago it started doing all this crazy stuff.

Since no one seems to be responding to me here, I guess tomorrow I'll call Apple and see what they have to say.  Will post an update after I know more.

    cc13,

Please do update if you get anything from Apple - I've been having some similar problems.  Very random behaviour if I close the lid and then reopen.  Similarly random if I invoke sleep.  Sometimes it will wake just fine; other times I just get a black screen and have to force a reboot.

I'm not sure to what extent it's related to trying to connect to another mac on my network.  I have an external hard drive connected to a desktop machine and use that for TM backups.  May be completely unrelated.

In any case, I know I'm being of no help, but I'd welcome any help you can pass on.

    wjosten,

Do you know if that update would just come in through the regular software update / app store process?  I had imagned it would.  I took delivery of my machine last week, and it has not shown as needing any updates - although perhaps it needs this one and did not have it applied before it left China for it's circuitous journey via S Korea, Kazakhstan and Germany before reaching the UK.

Yes, I tried to apply the update but when I run it it actually says it can't be run on my computer.  Not sure what that means and even the Apple support rep was confused about the message.  They attempted to repeat everything I had already done and nothing worked.  They were really confused about it and set up an appointment for me tomorrow to go into the local Apple store to let them try a hands on with the computer.

I'm not sure who to view the version of the SMC update on my system currently and the Apple rep seemed a bit confused about it as well.  System info shows a 2.3 version but the website lists 1.0 so not sure what gives there.

I'll update again tomorrow once I know what they're doing.

Well,  I have an appointment today to meet with Apple and the computer has started working perfectly.  Not sure what to do now because I know I'll drive all the way up there and they won't be able to reproduce the problem and it will be complete waste of time.  I'm really not sure what happened to cause the thing to start working because I rebooted 100 times yesterday while testing and it failed 100% of the time.

This morning its working as if it knew I was about to take it to the doctor.  Will post back if it starts up again.  Keeping my fingers crossed.

I have noticed something a bit similar re: my Retina MBP , when carried with lid shut down EITHER shuts itself off Or goes into a sleep which I cannot awaken

A number of times now I use my MBP , close the lid, carry it ( or put in my well padded bag), and when I put it back in place on my desk (which involves turning on its side to sit in an upright stand),the MBP does not come back on when I press space bar or track pad

I have to hold down power key and cold reboot

I cannot tell if the MBP has actually shut itself down or if it is still "on" but in such a deep sleep I cannt waken it.

ONLY happens when the MBP has been moved, jostled, turned over

My MBP sitting nicely and quietly on my desk, in clamshell mode connected to my external monitor,  seems to always come alive when I hit the space bar or track pad.

Very strange sort of " motion sickness"!
