Can not delete email messages.  "null" file will not accept-- what is a null file?  how can i correct this?

Background--did not change to i-cloud, did not upgrade operating system-just stayed how and where i was at--no reason except i was traveling-did not understand what I needed to do-etc-I am just a limited user-email, a little i-photo and search the internet that is it.  my son set this up for me several years ago bought all the long term warranties, phone support, etc.  never needed anything til now and they have all expired.  this is my first trip to this venue and took me two weeks to get to this point--no one in area has a mac other than me-so we can't talk about my problems.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.5.8)
