Aug 24, 2012 7:03 PM in response to Munchie32by Kivanc Muslu,Jabber is the protocol used by Google Chat that is correct. For iMessage, you need iCloud set up on your computer. Did you already do it?
If not, go to System Preferences > iCould.

Aug 24, 2013 4:46 PM in response to Munchie32by johnnyprince2,Ok here you go... Went on the nephews macbook and tried to send myself a pic... Wouldnt work because Jabber was on there for some reason... Here is how to get imessage like we know and love to work.
Open up Message by clicking the icon.
Now your gonna see the apple logo, then messages, file, edit and so on.
Click on Messages
Open preferences
Under the Account tab you will see whatever services you have avavilabe on message. Most likely your IMessages is inactive.
Click on the iMessage setting
Sign in using your user name and password.
Click what you want to be reached at. Phone number or email or both.
Exit.
Turn off Jabber on the bottom left.
There you go iMessages is now working again for you...
This has been tried and tested and I know it works. Please highlight this post as worked for you if it did... So other know it also works

ApplicationsNOTES.
When you use Mountain Lion for the first time after Upgrading Lion or Snow Leopard or if you Import a Mac User Account from another Mac then some of your info is added to the System Preference > Mail, Contacts and Calendars pane.
Email accounts are added here.
Some accounts listed can be used in Mail and in the Messages app and may well be Enabled for both. This may mean that as Princejohnny2 says you have an account already showing in Messages > Preferences >Accounts without actually activating the iMessages Account.
You will also notice that some of the accounts listed have Description fields.
This means the Account name can be changed. This is shown in the Window Menu (if you separate the Buddy Lists) and in the Messages Menu > Accounts.
If you don't change the name then the Default is to call the first that logs in to AIM the "AIM Buddy List". The First Jabber capable app is called the "Jabber Buddy list" even if it is a Google one.
The iMessages one can not be changed. Nor can the Bonjour one.
If you have two accounts that can log in to one service (i.e. two AIM valid accounts) then they take the Screen Name (AIM) or Jabber ID and the Buddy list name.
Example pic
So I have a Name I registered at AIM that I have had for some while (MAIN AIM)
I have a Google one that is listed as Gmail and is the highlighted example.
I also have an iCloud and an @Me.com ending name that can also login into AIM (they are valid AIM Screen Names due to an agreement between Apple and AIM).
The Window Menu showing these names
This Window Menu pic does not match the list exactly as I had temporarily changed the "Main AIM' to read "Main AIM Screen Name"
There are also Accounts showing that could not be seen in the list.
To get them separated like this you need to untick the line in the General Section of the Messages Preferences that refers to Gathering all accounts.
Summary.
Upgrading from a previous OS version or importing an Mac User Account is like to add things to the new Pane in System Preferences called Mail, Contacts and Calendars.
These are likely to be valid emails that are enabled in the Preferences Pane for Mail and the Messages app.
This is turn may mean that when you Open Messages for the first time it already has Active Accounts.
In iChat 3 the default was to have only one AIM and One Jabber account logged in at any one time
The Window Menu reflected this.
Later versions could login in more than one account to each service and added the Description Field in the Account's Preferences.
The default is to still call the first "AIM" or "Jabber" depending on the service it joins.
You can change the Description as my Pic shows.
If you don't change the Description but have more than one AIM or Jabber Account then they will take the Screen Name or Jabber ID (As the last two in the Window Menu Pic which I have blanked out).
