Q: Notes crashes every time I open it on Mountain Lion

Hi I'm using a mid-2010 Macbook Pro and I recently upgraded to Mountain Lion. However, whenever I try opening notes on my laptop it crashes. I have tried restarting as well. Please Help.

    I had constant crashes with notes until I took the Mac off line, copied & saved the notes in Textedit, then deleted them in the notes app > restarted and then put the notes back slowly..

    Taking the mac offline gave Notes a chance to settle without having to constantly sync.

    I have same problem with Notes crashing every time I open under Mountain Lion - it has never worked since I upgraded. Did anyone find the solution?

    I'm having the same issue after upgrading to mountain lion, notes crashes a few seconds after starting up. Not found a solution yet.

    I too have an issue with Notes (and Reminders).  Both are non-responsive.  They sync and I can see that they have, just I can't click on a note to open it.  It suggests Notes are active (top right menu screen) but the note won't open.

     

    I click on another note and nothing.

     

    Any ideas?

    I was having this issue also. I found this thread and disabling Exchange Notes did the trick. Obviously, this is the solution only if you were using Exchange to begin with.

     

    If you want to continue to use Exchange notes or perhaps try this to see if it works in general, I found a fix on this site. All works well now.

     

    1. Delete your exchange account from the Mail, Contacts & Calendars pane in System Preferences.


    2. Go to Finder, click "Go" in the menu bar, click "Go to Folder" and type in "~/Library" (without the quotes) in the box. This will take you to your user Library folder.


    3. Use the search box in the finder and type in "com.apple.notes" and click "Library" in the search bar that appears. This should now find several folders and files related to the Notes app. Rename or delete everything except the help files (with the lifesaver icons on them).


    4. Restart your Mac. Put your exchange account back into System Preferences, you can go ahead and activate the Notes sync service.


    5. Open Notes and it should be working now!

    If it helps, what I figured out is that any conflicting account in Mail app (in my case an invalid smtp server or password for that server) makes notes app crash. I deleted the conflicting server and that was it no more crashes at the beginning. Hope it helps.

     

    So fix any failing account and try again.

    I had the same issue and resolved it by deactivating notes for my Exchange and Freemail account while leaving it active for iCloud.

    I solved it.

     

     

    go to

     

    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.Notes

     

    then

     

    delete >  'com.apple.Notes' folder

    Excellent. It worked for me, too.

    It just happened to me in one of my Macs and I could not startup Notes at all.

    Somehow, the local files were corrupted.

    I've had this happen to me twice in Mavericks. Once back in Decembr 2013 and then again today. Each time, the culprit was a Login item that was not playing nicely with the rest of the system. I simply deleted it and everything was fine.

     

    To do this, go into System Preferences --> Users & Groups and click the Login Items tab to see a list of applications that open automatically at login. At this point, you can either delete all the ones that are not from Apple and then restart, which should fix the problem. Or you can try deleting one at a time (restarting each time) to see which one is the culprit.

    All I had to do was uncheck 'notes' on the exchange account.  No more crashes on MacBook!  Thanks for letting me know it was the exchange account causing the issue.

    Solution:

     

    1) Turn off Wifi

    2) Open notes and go to accounts

    3) Uncheck sync notes

    4) turn on Wifi

     

    Your notes application will now re-sync with iCloud notes and your application is restored!
