Aug 25, 2012 3:03 AM in response to BDAquaby rsp8,All of those videos play fine, as do 1080p movie trailers from the web. Does this suggest it's something to do with copy protection/DRM? I've certainly authorised the mac, and the wierd thing is that the 1080p (definitely) version plays fine in iTunes for Windows7 running in a virtual machine (Parallels) on the same mac.
I can't believe that iTunes on mac won't let me play a purchased 1080p file?
There are a couple of things I am wondering:
i) I moved the library from a PC when I migrated to mac. I did this by copying the contents of the iTunes music folder across (including library files etc) NOT by importing files into a new library - I wanted to keep playlists, favourites etc
ii) I have a RAM upgrade of 2x2Gb sticks for a total of 8Gb, is it possible this could interfere with the playback?
I have NO other graphics artifacts at all.

Aug 25, 2012 11:09 AM in response to rsp8by BDAqua,Right now it would seem to be to do with the transfer method.
If you have room I'd make a new admin account & try importing the files from the PC for a test.

Aug 25, 2012 5:08 PM in response to BDAquaby rsp8,Appreciate your help. I created a new admin account and downloaded the file again from iTunes - same deal, no difference.
The shows were purchased after I'd moved the old iTunes library to the mac, so they were never present on my old PC.
It is certainly a very odd problem.

Aug 25, 2012 8:19 PM in response to rsp8by BDAqua,Indded Odd, have you contacted Apple about it yet?
I've sworn never to buy anything from Apple again, most everyone was a big expensive mistake.

Sep 2, 2012 8:33 PM in response to BDAquaby rsp8,Yes, I contacted Apple support who called my by phone, they were unaware of the issue - hadn't seen it before - and suggested I post in the iTunes community forum or try redownloading the file.
Next stop genius bar, and that means unplugging my iMac and lugging it through a shopping centre. Not impressed.
I'm beginning to agree with you BDAqua, the latest being my AppleTV paperweight that fails to make a proper HDCP compliant connection to a Sony Bravia.

Oct 16, 2012 12:35 AM in response to timmadamssby rsp8,Sorry no resolution, next stop is removing the additional RAM, which is Apple installed but one of the only things I can think of that makes my iMac 'non-standard' - can't understand why more people aren't having the issue...

Oct 16, 2012 5:33 AM in response to rsp8by timmadamss,It's strange as yesterday morning after turning my imac on for the first time in two weeks and updating it, the movies DID play back. All of them. Then later that day it went back to scrambled display.
I wouldn't bother removing the RAM. Mine is a standard mac with no additions and still does this.

Oct 16, 2012 6:53 AM in response to rsp8by stevenfrombrownsburg,This is an odd problem that I am totally unable to duplicate on my MBA. Even the TV Shows and Movies I have purchased and downloaded from iTunes, and have since moved to an external drive to reclaim some space play perfectly in 1080p (via HDMI on my HDTV) through Quicktime (I'm not even using iTunes to play them, though they also play in iTunes).
The only thing I am left with is that it may be a hardware issue. Try forcing the display to use the Intel HD Graphics (I'm pretty sure it should be present on your iMac). If it plays via Intel Graphics, it's probably an issue with your Radeon card.
