Relaunching Finder does not seem to fix it.
Reboot should sort the issue.
I have found no other fix through terminal.MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.1), 2.4GHz IntelCorei5 320GB HD 8GB RAM
reboot didn't fix it, but i rebooted into safe mode and fixed permissions. that fixed the problem for me.
Yes, good one Yoda_Oz. I had to go that route once myself.
This has happened to me more than once so far.
The last time what set off the bug, was when I was using terminal to make hidden files visible.MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.1), 2.4GHz IntelCorei5 320GB HD 8GB RAM

It just happen to me:
- day before the problem, some icons on safari shows some tv static like image after resume from sleep. and have hang twice
- then icon is missing after reboot
- if create a new account, it works without problem
- if I delete a old problem account and recreate it (without using the old home folder), problem still exists. So problem is not caused by any corrupted files inside home folder
- fix premission not work
Finally boot from recovery and reinstall macosx. It fixed all problem, data is still there and no need to reinstall every apps.
