Restart the computer with the Option, Command, P, and R keys held down, and release them upon the second chime.

It turned out that it didn't solve it. I tried what you suggested Niel and rebooted 4 times without the problem. So, I thought it was solved. But this morning when I started the mac up, there it was again. Do you have any other ideas? I am hoping I don't have to haul this monster to the apple store again.

I'm having the exact same problem since upgrading to Mt. Lion. The green check mark should be removed from the original post since the problem wasn't solved. Any more suggestions?

How do you remove the check mark? Do you know?

Sorry, I don't know. I just thought the origianl poster might have that option. Maybe not. This problem is only mildly annoying and I think the next update will probably fix it so I'm going to be patient for now and see what happens. First updates to new operating systems usually come out within 3 weeks. We'll see.

Just installed os 10.8.1 and it appears to fix this problem. I rebooted 10 times and never had it go into the Linux/single user type mode at boot up. It always booted to mac os.

The update didn't change anything for me. It's done it at least 3 times since I updated. Maybe the next update?
Hope there isn't some underlying problem that's worse. So far typeing exit or reboot is not that big a deal. Time will tell.

It ended up not working for me either. I started a new thread for 10.8.1. Hopefully this will get you there and you can weigh in. https://discussions.apple.com/message/19398961#19398961. Sorry about the confusion. When I got 10.8.1 I booted 10 times without the problem and that's why I posted it as fixed. A day or so later the problem came back.
