Q: IOS 5.1.1. update bug (Volume Control)

This thread concerns IOS 5.1.1. update and the subsequent loss of volume button functionality and use of internal speakers.

Please can someone help from the mac team!

It's not a jailbreak phone. only purchased in early April on O2. Updated to 5.1.1. yesterday morning and now the volume buttons are virtually redundant!. Here are the symptoms;

  1. When the volume buttons are pressed on the home screen i get "ringer" and the speaker symbol appear but nothing more (ie. +/- volume)
  2. When playing back from iTunes with no headphones in, I get nothing through the internal speakers, nor do the volume buttons work, nor is the volume slider visable.
  3. When i playback Youtube content with no headphones in, I get nothing through the internal speakers, nor do the volume buttons work, nor is the volume slider visable.
  4. With headphones plugged in sound is audible and volume buttons work.
  5. Whilst using voicemail, (no headphones connected) i can play the message through the speakers and control volume using side buttons.

What's the deal Mac Support? I have restored the phone twice and also given the headphone jack a good blow with Servisol Duster 101.

Thanks, P

I don't get it that half of you have been able to solve this problem by cleaning??? The speakers work for an incoming call, texts, alarm and even the phone call/iPod duo trick! Nothing to do with a dirty connection.....they work all right, just not with iPod or YouTube which has become annoying!! Has anyone figured out anything to do with the software/update???

I have experienced the same problem. I cleaned the dock connector and shortly after it started working again. BUT, ONLY FOR one month. I tried cleaning the dock connector but it has not corrected the problem. I am taking it to the apple store tomorrow.

Add me to the list. Just noticed this problem yesterday. Tried everything listed here. Still have the problem. My iPhone 4s is about 3 months old. It is super clean. Yes I am running 5.1.1  If I monkey around with all the suggested fixes (other than crack) I can sometimes get it to work for a bit. Probably going to go to the Apple store and see if they will replace. Sure seems more like a software issue to me though.

Went into Apple store last night. Apple Genius said it was a hardware issue and hooked me up with a new phone.

My symptoms:  Black iPhone 4S. No sounds on anything other than ringer and phone calls. That means no sound on games and music, either from the default music app or others. Volume control does not work. When depressing the volume buttons the volume graphic appears, but without the bar at the bottom, at all. Not a bar with no white boxes, but no bar at all. Now, I spent 13 years in various software and hardware support roles and this absolutely sounds like it would be a software issue, no doubt about it. However...

It's been nearly a week since I cleaned the port and the sound came back. No problems with the sound since. I'm not suggesting mine was the ultimate fix for this as this is the second time my sound has gone out in the same way. And it's certainly odd. And maybe I did something else while I was cleaning it that actually fixed it.

But cleaning out the port seems to have done the trick, for now...

My Volume doesn't work as well AND my battery was draining WAY too fast and shutting down. The ringer works, but no sound for video or music. It seems to work with earpods in, but not with the built-in speakers. I took to Apple and they said it was because my USB connection must've gotten wet because it tripped the water sensor. Makes no sense at all. I did a complete factory restore. Fixed the battery draining problem, but not the volume. Definitely software related. Come on Apple!! Fix this annoyance please.

My problem is the same as first noted, on an iPhone 4.  It just started happening yesterday before I had updated to 5.1.1.  I did restart, and restored and updated to 5.1.1. I also tried the trick of making a call on speakerphone mode, switching to music app, and yes the music came out of the speaker along with my phone call! Weird. Speakers still not working.

I have the exact problem as everyone else in this discussion. I was about to get a new phone before I stumbled across this and found loads of us are having the same problem. Has what we need to do to resolve this issue been sorted yet?

It's a long drive to my nearest Apple store so would rather resolve before I take my phone into them.

    Thanks for help in advance.

    Nigel.

    Nigel,

Actually there are several different actions that some have found to resolve their specific issue. Most believe this remains a SW issue especially exposed in the 5.1.1 upgrade.

AFAIK all symptoms point to the phone thinks it is still docked, therefor, except for speakerphone, no sound comes out of the built in speakers and the volume control buttons on the side are disabled, the volume icon does not have the slider. I suggest you try all the ideas in this very long thread, blowing into the docking with compressed air (fixed my issue) or cleaning the docking port with a toothbrush, a few wipe and reload the phone some pressing lower right side of the phone while docking(?) and undocking, and more.

But in many cases, a trip to the store for replacement was required, either nothing worked or the issue returned after a week or so.  In my case, I fixed mine with compressed air but didn't take a chance, replaced the phone.

My iPhone 4 started experiencing this issue recently and it wasn't after upgrading to 5.1.1.  what finally fixed it for me was cleaning the charging connector with a toothbrush as shown in a number of youtube videos (Dry, no alcohol was used).  apparently there was dust particles causing the issue.  OR

Other than the dust particles causing this..

The issue that I believe might have caused this problem to begin with, was my docking stand since it docs the phone at an angle and may have forced the charging connector in the phone to get slightly bent and possibly some connectors to loose touch with other components since the speaker components are in the lower right corner (as mentioned in the link below) close to the charging slot. http://leonography.blogspot.in/2011/05/iphone-4-no-speaker-sound-problem.html

The speakers sound is back to normal now on my phone.  Hope that helps.
