MacBook Pro Retina display burn-in?

    Sebdude, do you have IR?

     

    As a rule of thumb in the USA and Canada, if the product is less than 15 days old in your possession, you can return it no questions asked.

     

    Beyond that, it's case by case, but almost assured to be repairs and not a full device replacement (why should they anyways, why replace the whole thing when you have been using it for a while and only part of it is dysfunctional ?)

    You don't need to convince me. I'm just saying that several people, including myself, have been told by Apple (in store on when calling AppleCare) that "all LCD screens exhibit image retention, so just because your screen shows image retention doesn't mean that it is a problem that requires service".

     

    I've even been referred to the following KB article by various Apple people in response to this issue as a reason why they wouldn't do anything about it: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2807

     

    On more than one occasion I've been told by the "Geniuses" that there wasn't anything they could do about the problem and that I'd have to call AppleCare.

     

    That doesn't mean that you won't find someone at Apple that will help you out if you keep trying enough times, but I've seen/heard nothing that makes me confident that Apple will resond to this problem in a way that will satisfy all customer experiencing this LG-related IR problem with their rMBPs.

     

    After going through multiple hurdles, I was finally able to get a refund for my second rMBP. I only decided to take the refund because I was told my only other option was to have the screen replaced, but if I wasn't happy after that, tough, because they wouldn't replace it again and I would no longer have the option to get my money back once they replaced the screen.

    @Dr Sly - and are you sure about that fact? Do we have even one LG display used for more than a few days that hasn't exhibited the image retension? Can anyone, who on previous machines saw the IR, confirm that his current LG is perfectly okay?
    I'm asking because I'm afraid that some reports of "flawless LG panels" are written by people who just don't notice IR...

    Dr. Sly, yes I do have IR. and no, it's not within the 15 day NQA return period. Agree with your thinking, just fix the part thats broken, specially if it it's relatively simple to replace as HD or SuperDrive.  But logic board or screen replacements for a machine that young is bit much, specially since opening and replacing parts on these machines doesn't improve there reliability as my previous experience with Apple's repairs have shown. Brought it in 5 times, every time a different issue, but they finally replaced the machine. So I'm a bit reluctant to send it in for repair..

    My simple solution against unfair, dismissive customer support employees anywhere is:

     

    - document the knowledge base on the matter

     

    - write up a formal notice against the business in 1 to 3 pages

     

    - bring the package to the store manager and tell them you are filling suit against them if they don't settle this before sending the formal notice to small claims court.

     

    It works like a charm. Why wouldn't it anyways, if you are not abusing their policies?

     

    I've haven't lost a case yet. Filed against Apple once, Dell once, Bell Canada once too. People sometimes need a little more persuasion to get their sense of business ethics back on track. Having said that, Apple is usually very helpful.

    I'd say that the jury is still out on whether there are "definitely good" LG screens. Many people may not notice this problem, depending on their usage. And many people that first tested their LG screen for IR said it was good only to later come back and say it had started to show IR after a few days/weeks.

    Hello Tadziak,

     

    there are no sure ways to assess this. I have read the whole thread here and many others online, seems like there is a niche of people who adamantly believe that they don't have image retention on their LG displays, so I have no reason to presume that they are imagining their luck :-)

    Yeah 5 repair sessions is a bit much !

     

    At least they changed the whole thing eventually...

     

    I sincerely hope that everyone will get the best outcome out of this new issue with subpar displays.

     

    I'm not settling for anything less than a perfect screen, whether it's a LG or a Samsung !

    Image Retention is not a feature. It's a defect, has always been and will always be.

     

    Any of the reps calling it a feature is rather pathetic.

     

    All displays? How come Samsungs don't? How come my Dell doesn't? How come my five year old MBP doesn't have this feature?

     

    Should add that we haven't seen anyone testing an in-store LG and coming back with good results. It's probably because they all develop/worsen IR eventually. The in-store ones have been all running for a while so they all display the symptoms.

    Let's all keep our fingers crossed for getting finally what we deserve for that price (I paid in Poland 4000$ for base 2.6 ghz model). The bad thing is that we don't have a Genius Bar so every time I want to exchange the process takes a week or two (shipment from China). One way or another, I want a perfect screen for that money!

    Just picked mine up today after being out 4 days, and apparently they replaced the screen. I performed the terminal cmd to check to see which display I received.

     

    LP154WT1-SJA1

    DCN232200WSDMJ0AS

     

    Another LG...

     

    So far so good though. I can't seem to replicate the IR issues at all. But I'll report back here if anything.
