If I unlock my iPhone 4 (iOS5) to use a different carrier while on holiday, will I need to sync to iTunes?

I do not plan on taking my computer with me (just my iPhone, iPad and family iPods), and currently sync to iCloud on all my devices.

I will only be able to get the new microSIM once I arrive at my destination, so I don't want to do this if I will have to hook it up to iTunes.

Thanks!

iPhone 4, iOS 5.1.1

You cannot unlock your iPhone yourself...only your carrier can do that.  If your carrier unlocks your iPhone, then you can use it like anyother iPhone, sync via iTunes or iCloud, update via WiFi, etc.

But contact your carrier, do not attempt to unlock it yourself as doing so will void your warranty.

You will need to connect to your computer and restore in order to UNLOCK your iPhone from Telus prior to leaving on your trip. You do not need to restore it with your computer after that to use a different microSIM.

You might need to have your company request the unlock since it is their iPhone.

    Dear Elrin,

How did the trip go? Did your phone operate as expected, or did you have any dificulty? I am asking because I am also in a similar situration as you discribe, but travel to Italy for Vacation. I own my phone so I don't need permission from work.

    Thanks,

    Dave
