A couple of questions:
- Do you have an iCloud account?
- Do you see the Subscriptions Calandar group in the sidebar?
- Have you turned on the "Birthdays" calendar? If no, do and see what happens.
- Calendar aka iCal is set as your default calendar app?
1 I have an icloud account
2: yes I see the subscription
3: yes I turned on Birthdays calendar
4: yes ical is my default.
I have also reloaded Mountain lion and deleted and resubscribed to the calendar. I have verified all of my settings comparing them to my Mac book pro which does work.
I am at a total loss what to try next.
I would appreciate any other advice you can provide.
Before upgrading to Mountain lion I believe that the sidebar showed "Calendarson my Mac" now all of my calendars show under a heading of "icloud" , but this is exactly what my Mac Book Pro shows and it works.

When you re-subscribed did you use the link Mashby gave? - US Holidays calendar - I just checked this and it worked perfectly well, but if you are simply refreshing your existing subscription with the same URL that may be the issue. A lot of calendars were originally hosted on ical.mac.com and that domain is dead in the water - only now are some calendars turning up on new domains that actually work. Try resubscribing using the link above.
