If you mean that you upgraded from an earlier version of OS X (for example from Leopard 10.5.x to Snow Leopard 10.6) then you should uninstall FCE and then reinstall it from scratch.  There are so many changes in OS X from one version to another that the  Pro Apps in particular (and FCE is one of the Pro Apps) do not fare well  after the upgrade.  Uninstalling & reinstalling seems to do the  trick.

The method to uninstall is slightly different depending on the version of FCE that you have.

    - If you have FCE HD (aka FCE v3.5) see Uninstalling FCE HD

    - If you have FCE v4 see Final Cut Express: Troubleshooting Basics.

    - There is also the FCS Remover utility

However, if you mean that you were already on Snow Leopard (say, 10.6.2) and merely updated to 10.6.4 (as your profile indicates) and are now having problems with FCE, then there is something else going on.  OS X updates usually do not affect applications, including FCE.

When you say you cannot open FCE, what exactly happens?

I have updated to OS 10.6.4 I have just updated to SL from Leopard.

You appear to have upgraded (not updated) from Leopard to Snow Leopard, followed by an update to Snow Leopard 10.6.4.

I suggest uninstalling FCE and then reinstalling FCE from scratch, as indicated in my previous post.
